Because the stresses involved, while using ABS plastic, necessitate very bulky designs to handle the load.

You might be right - it's for that very reason I normally use extra durable condoms...

Well, the ABS plastic won't last that long. As it fires, the barrel will wear out quickly and accuracy will suffer.
The big problem is that this moron is releasing the plans. Then anyone with access to a 3D printer will be able to print their own untracable weapons and use them for one or two crimes, melt them down, then make new ones.
I can't wait to see the first lawsuit hit this idiot when one of "his" weapons is used to kill someone. Oh! He didn't print the gun you say?! Sure, be he took the steps necessary to research what it does take and then released that information into the public domain without reguard to the consequences.
I know. This compares a lot to the usually lawsuits against the real gun manufacturers. The difference being that real weapons are much more difficult to product by the average person and the tools and materials required to build one are far more expensive than $8,000. His version is far more accessible. There's a ton of lawyers out there just waiting to use that angle.

From the video, it looked like the barrel is a snap-in jobbie, so it can be replaced after each shot.
And it only has to be accurate once...

True. In any case, this tool is being so irresponsible.

Doesn't really mean anything in European countries. The gun is pretty useless without the firing pin and bullets - which are illegal to buy

I'm not sure why people are getting upset over the manufacture of a weapon.
There is about 100 ways to kill a person available in your average home.
Seems to me the best defense is to not be the type of person someone would want to kill.

Yeah but only a gun can be used at a distance. Completely different animal..

I happen to think it is less distance and more the currently politically correct topic for which to get one's panties in a wad.
Here is how people think today:
1: I'm hysterical, lonely, scared, and confused. This makes me angry. I cannot pinpoint the reason why I'm a basket case. There must be a reason for it.
2: Oh look, this person over here is hysterical over guns! I can channel all my rage into that and I'll appear sane! Plus it makes me feel better to have a target for my rage and I get to hate other people!
Later...when guns die down... it will be (or has been) global warming, big tobacco, crazy lefties, crazy righties, the hurricane, public schools, big oil, EU crisis, Adolph Hitler, white people or some other fill in the blank object for personal insanity.
The insanity is so predictable it's getting boring.
I don't even defend anything anymore because the insanity is so wishy-washy I just wait for the topic to change - the mob is this uncontrollable emotionally over-wrought bug-eyed crazy frothing at the mouth aberration of nature that it should be viewed at a distance.
So... what will next month's crazy hot topic that needs to be fixed at the cost of personal freedom be? Diet Soda? Pot? Big Cars? iPads? Who knows?

Are you aware that armed drones and explosives are not things that ordinary people are allowed to own either?

Yeah, sure, like the big panic that Glock was supposed to be undetecftable.
Um, no. Bullets are metal. etc.
Untraceable...I suppose, since you are the manufacturer.
Doesn't matter though. If they don't have the gun in hand, they can't "trace" it anyway. And, if they do have it in hand, what are they tracing it for?

Bullets can be made from plastic too.

Bad people do. And the only way to understand the nefarious capabilities of 3D printers is to demonstrate it. I would never blame the people inventing or demonstrating the capabilities, the public, lawmakers, and government need to understand their capabilities.
I truly believe that 3d printers will be the great post internet industrial revolution. Manufacturing will be in-sourced, on site, in your house, in your country. Cheap labor will no longer be an advantage (robotics never became cheaper than labor). Designs will be all that matter.
This is going to happen, the issue is when, not if.

I don't think it is a bad idea. The notion that everyone will rush out and buy a 3D printer and start printing out weapons is ludicrous. You might get the odd lunatic who might but it is far cheaper to just buy a gun - obtaining illegal weapons is, by the way the media talks about it, pretty easy so why waste time trying to print one?

Since I can't reply to the thread Chris posted, I'll post this here. The winners to the first challenge in the Azure Challenge have been announced. Congratulations to them! Looks like winning any of the bigger prizes is going to be harder than I thought.
Oh well, back to the grindstone for me. I'd steal some ideas from the winners of the first challenge, but I don't think I'm going to be getting much sleep as it is.
EDIT: Also, kudos to the hamsters for getting those winners out so quickly. Judging 100+ entries can't be easy.

Also a perfect motivation, i'll work harder on my project from now on
Congratulations to both other winners and good luck for the rest of this contest to all other participants!
