http://www.zdnet.com/new-zealand-bans-software-patents-7000019955/[^]
This should be listed as one of the greatest innovations of the computer age, allowing developers to innovate, and software companies to make back some of the billions that sharks and lawyers have been screwing out of the industry.

Well, I'm still skeptical.
Processes will still be patentable if the computer program is merely a way of implementing a patentable process. But patent claims that cover computer programs "as such" will not be allowed.
...
the new law will only apply to new patent applications, so existing software patents will continue to stand So is that really any improvement at all?
The old software patents still stand, and the new ones will just pretend to be patenting the underlying process, so that any implementation is also automatically forbidden.

Maybe a bit; but nowhere near the extend that most headline writers are implying. The law's vague enough that the patent office/courts are going to have to decide exactly what it means in a number of key places; and regardless of what you think of his opinions on the general validity of tech patents; Florian Mueller[^] is right that the NZ patent office isn't going to approach it the way headline writers are treating it.
Quote: In theory, patent examiners and judges should read substantive patent law without any bias. And many of them try hard to. And the one thing they certainly won't have is an anti-patent bias. New Zealand's patent office is not going to be interested in interpreting the law in a way that would require it to lay off half or more of its staff. It will have to apply the law, and it may receive instructions from the executive government. But it won't approach this new piece of legislation with a "good riddance" mindset.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

There are only so many ways to add two numbers so how do you patent it?
And if you take that principle then, by Occam's Razor, how can you patent any software?
Sure, one can copyright an entire ensemble, as like a book, but not each individual sentence.
I think NZ has got it right.

Don't believe it, I'm doing some maths practice with the girls right now and you'd surprised at the number of [wrong] ways you can add up two numbers...

It's a Northian Language thing, so "ED" is a mass noun.
