Proper password hashing advice has been around for what, 10 years now? I really can't believe that a professional site doesn't use salted hashes. I use salted hashes in little play applications and websites ... (though some of them use MD5 because they're a few years old and that was the advice at the time, and it's good enough to be pretty safe still).

I just got a dialog box from Outlook 2010 that had that title. I wonder if it was self-referentially reporting its own typo.

This is not a typo, this is optimization. The next thing we are going to see is this word amended in the MS Word spell checker. This is Microsoft, they create the standards after all.

If they optimized all the vowels out, we wouldn't have to write code to normalize diacritics before searching!

I'm thinking of making the switch to the Dvorak layout. Partly to see if I can increase my typing speed, partly to see if it's more comfortable.
I've read plenty by people who've made the switch, and plenty by people who think it's not worth their time. Is there anyone here who has put some serious effort into learning to touch type on Dvorak, but then switched back to querty? What was your reasoning for switching back?

I have never even seen a Dvorak keyboard. But I have a feeling, key positions, if you have spent long enough in the game, is an unconscious thing. It has to be quite difficult to switch I guess.

I can imagine. I mouse left handed; and until I bought a mouse with hardware reversed buttons I'd drive anyone in corporate IT bonkers when they remoted into my machine since the windows setting I used also swapped the left/right buttons on their virtual mouse. Fortunately that's no longer an issue and if someone needs to sit down in front of my PC I can just plug in a right handed mouse and give them that to use.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?

I have never seen a QUERTY keyboard, is that a regional thing?

I guess that should have been QUUERTY...

I'm trying right now. Have been for the last month.
I picked up on the letter locations pretty quickly, but have reached a plateau with my typing speed. It's far from what I type with QEWRTY (try spelling that on a Dvorak keyboard. It's about a third of what I used to do. I'm real close to switching back but keep telling myself that I'll get better or that typing slower allows me to think more about what I'm saying.I haven't found it to be beneficial yet. I even rearranged the keys on my keyboard to help. Windows does make it very easy to switch back and forth.
This is just my experience. I think it would have been better to start off on this keyboard 20 years ago instead of proving you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

If you think you can, you will.
If you think you can't, you won't.
Either way, you're right.

Terrorists use Dvorak keyboards.
Are you sure you want to give in to terrorists?

Good luck with that...
I would suspect that if you aren't a fast typist, or are a hunt-and-peck two finger typist, switching to a different layout wouldn't be too hard with some practice.
Personally, I'm not sure I a) could switch or b) would want to, as I type 90wpm on a standard qwerty keyboard...

A friend of mine did it for about 2 years. He stopped because it made using anyone elses computer a massive cognitive dissonance attack.

I hope this is not one of the prohibited topics here in Lounge.
There are a lot of shows/events on television as queen completes 60 years. I, for one, do not understand the importance of this. I searched for her accomplishments and she hasn't really done anything apart from marrying a prince and getting old.
What makes this special apart from British emotional attachments to the old lady?

If she were a politician, then rip me off. But she ain't. My point is, you don't get importance just because you lived long (unless it is exceptional).
