Some ISPs offer a service which will buy the name once it becomes available.
www.123-reg.co.uk offer this kind of service. You could write a small app to query the whois records if you can be bothered.

I'm surprised any xxx domains are old enough to expire.

I use Microsoft's Office 365 SharePoint (great Product). I got in on the beta and then subscribed to it. Naturally I used IE9 to view and develop. After beta I started having problems like; saving, changing permissions, using certain ribbon tools and even moving from tool set to tool set.
After much wasted time I called MS. I am in the P1 category meaning you have to use forum help and if you are lucky email help from MS. Well I was at my limit; I found a number to call if you were in an upper group above P1 which get phone support. MS was nice enough to listen to what I had to say “that your development was not working in Office 365". They put me with a support guy and we with him remotes in verified the problem.
A couple of hours were spent on this problem using IE9 to no avail. He noticed I had FireFox on my PC as well so he says let’s see what it does using a different browser, logged out of IE, Login using FireFox and would you believe it. Every problem encountered by IE went away and FireFox allowed editing, permission change, and I even found tools I had not seen before.
I have several laptops win 7 and all would not work with IE however they did with FireFox. The MS support guy was amazed as I was and suggested I use FireFox to develop. I thought Microsoft pushes Office 365 big time, however their own browser will not let you use the SharePoint ribbons. How messed up is that.
I hope I have saved someone out there some time by pointing this out because MS has made no attempt to fix this problem. I now use FireFox for 80% of the things I do on the web.

I never fail to be amazed at what MS can do and yet doesn't, nor at things you find it can do without them telling you!

... that after 5 months of fairly intense spare time development, a lot of toing and froing and general frustration with MercurialHG, Sacha and I will be releasing 3 articles tonight. I've mentioned the VS addin before, and now I've finished my article (to Sacha's 2 articles).
As a teaser, there is a big announcement in Sacha's article and we both owe a huge amount of thanks to certain individuals. I'm not going to attempt to steal Sacha's thunder here, but we had a big problem that someone has kindly stepped into the fray to help us out with. When they go live, please read Sacha's articles - the announcement (from our point of view) really is that big.

I only wrote it as VS2002-5 sucked so bad and was not free. VS Express kinda killed it for me (since 2008).
It seems we have gotten to the stage where hardware is sufficient to run poorly designed IDE's.

I have and to some extent, still do use it for Android and microcontroller stuff. Runs pretty fine here
