I think it is this. I received just a photo from a friend which looks very similar...
The only difference against the live view is, that I see the moon as a small spot and a very big _clean dark_ area around it. I think that is hard to reproduce by photography because of the light intensities...

I expect the phenomenon to be somewhat different depending on air quality, temperature, altitude...

Yes you are right. 01:40 hours (== 9 cigarettes) later the dark area is covered partially by "dust"
Anyway fascinating for me, as I see (am aware of) this the first time.

Well if the rest of the Swiss population is out there chugging that many cigs (every 10 mins?) that explains the "dust."

Second pic: I can remember to see this at my place for about two times. Thisof course without golden gate bridge (?) brookling bridge(?) in the background
