Huh. Well, I figured it was always because the rules were made to give them an unfair advantage, or that they realized that was the case to give someone else the advantage. That's how it seems to work here in USA for the corporate types. But then again, I've not been a fan of fascism. Guess I may need to warm up to it, both political parties seem to be moving away from democracy and towards fascism. Its either that or figure out how to escape the country and get somewhere safe. And by safe I mean where they don't tell you to give up your constitutional rights to gain safety that is merely a figment of their imagination.

I haven't been around here lately, except to drop in briefly, but I haven't seen anything a bit offensive in the Lounge, Pete. I know you're not an alarmist, so I'm wondering what I missed. The Lounge has always welcomed humor and especially satire, if such is presented in a tasteful manner, without personal rancor. I haven't spotted anything that exceeds the bounds of propriety lately. But if it's happening, then I agree completely that such posts belong in the Soapbox.

When I was (a lot) younger I used to drive fairly fast everywhere as I was always in a hurry to get to the next exciting part of my life.
One day, after having decided that driving fast on narrow English residential streets with cars parked on both sides of the road might not be a good idea, I was going, for the first time I remember, slightly under the 30 mph limit. I saw a small ball bounce out into the street just ahead of me. I hit the brakes and skidded the car sideways and actually stopped with my door just an inch away from the small boy who ran out between the parked cars in single-minded pursuit of the ball. He stopped, yelled in surprise, fell over and started to cry. His frantic mother came running out after him and I thought, "I am in trouble here!" However, she yelled at the idiot kid, smacked him (the good old days of direct parental feedback), picked him up, mouthed a tearful "Thank you!" to me and ran back inside with him.
It took me a couple of minutes to straighten up my car (how I didn't hit the cars parked either side of me I don't know) and about twenty minutes to stop shaking.
There are definite reasons for some rules and they should definitely be followed - all the time!
PS. It made me feel good about following the rules for once in my life until I found out later that that little boy grew up to be a lawyer!  Well, you can't win 'em all!

My only car accident happened a little more than 6 months ago, keeping the safety distance AND respecting the limit - barely. I crashed behind a distracted girl that thought at the last moment that she had to brake in order to wait to invade the other lane to enter the gas station. I had a spli second distraction checking the speed AND the rear view mirror as the womand behind me already almost crashed into me twice in two subsequent roundabouts so I was a little edgy... when I saw the aforemetioned girl with her car fully stopped in the middle of the road.
I braked with all I had but still came crashing behind her, luckily I had little remaining speed and I still managed to take 5.000€ of damagers to my car. Now I drive 10 km/h UNDER the limit and those who want to overtake are very free to do it as they please.
Just the other day I was almost involved in what could have been a nightmarish accident - the guy behind me was in a stupid hurry overtaking anyone and travelling basically in the middle of the road, half car in one lane and half in the opposite... while approaching a 90° curve... when from that curve another Darwin Award candidate came from the opposite direction at 90 mph with a very coarse trajectory that placed him at the extreme border of its lane. And then guy behind me was at most at 50 cm from my behind so if those two crashed frontally I could have been involved without having done anything.

I agree and I have seen the same issue you are discussing in a wide range of forums.
The underlying reason for this is that the Internet provides primarily anonymous communications on forums as no one has to sign with their real names. This and other technologies have led to a sociological breakdown of traditional courtesies over the years (among other things) as well as traditional barriers that many people adhered to, even the rascals who make disrespectful and hurtful comments to others. As a result, a basic self-censorship was imposed.
This is not the case anymore as many people now feel that they can say anything they want and get away with it. In addition, many forums are no longer being moderated for proper postings and the people who would abuse such a privilege know it...

And what are the rules for those that slip through for the rest of us?
For example, in our company, we have a HUGE rule. When it comes toe email communications,
if a message can be interpreted in multiple ways, EVERYONE MUST interpret it in the MOST POSITIVE
way!
The reason is simple... We cannot correct what was written or sent. we may not know the ultimate intent of the email, and we MANY TIMES have misinterpreted something and got bent out of shape over it.
So, AFAIAC, I would suggest we have a rule that says if someone posts something you don't like, that you do not respond to it, and that you are welcome to notify a moderator to deal with it.
They will slip through. I accidentally asked a question about an article I wrote. I was not trying to create a Click Bait conversation, I was curious. And I was TOLD not to do this, and I wont do it again.
You get used to talking to people in this forum as friends. And sometimes, one conversation you might have with your other friends makes it into the forum.
It is the death knell of the forums if that is all we get, and we don't moderate.
But PLEASE do not suggest we ban words like Infidel, etc. The answer to free speech you don't like is more speech. Or a moderator email with a reminder of the appropriate place, and a delete.
In general, it happens, just like emails that sound worse than they were intended to be. It is how we RESPOND to them that determines the type of community that we are!

What I can never understand is why people use "children" as the reason to avoid talk of sex, as though pre-pubescent children would really care either way.
Personally, I think using kids to justify avoiding taboo subjects is just a proxy of adults' personal embarrassment.

The title of the OP was abstract. While I don't lurk here enough to be able to suggest why "those specific people" don't follow the rules, in general rules create a context that allows those possessing a resource to devote themselves to its enjoyment, rather than to its defense. In general "street smart" people are experts at knowing how far the rules can be ignored before the system curbs their behavior. In the interim, they can have a lot of fun (and amass a fair amount of wealth) indulging their egos at our expense.

I always thought it was strange when someone says to "respect" the rules. You can "ignore" the rules, "break" the rules, and "follow" the rules. But respecting them seems a bit like worshiping them which is against the rules.
Barbossa: First, your return to shore was not part of our negotiations nor our agreement so I must do nothing. And secondly, you must be a pirate for the pirate's code to apply and you're not. And thirdly, the code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules. Welcome aboard the Black Pearl, Miss Turner.
