Well, I've had to suffer through my third Win7 install in the span of two months (three different computers). This one was my laptop. It's taking an awful long time to get Windows Update to do anything. Even with a wired 1gb ethernet connection, it took FOUR HOURS before it started downloading updates (after I clicked he "download updates" button).
I'm thinking I could blame this on global warming, since Obama is blaming everything else on it.

I think you might be on to something. I know that there are several large data centrals here in Sweden, some placed far north and according to what I've concluded myself sources it's to reduce cooling costs. But this years winter has so far proved very warm and they probably has shut down the ac because why not it's winter and the season should do its job which results in overheated centrals.
So it'd guaranteed that its global warming that's at fault here.
Soon these data housings will be placed in the arctic to reduce their environmental impact but it will only result in the ice melting around these installations and speeding up climate change but don't tell anyone. We don't want the environmentalists to figure out that the internet is becoming a factor in global warming or they will impose environmental taxes on porn internet traffic.

I got sick and tired of downloading the same updates over and over on all my physical and virtual machines through my 5mbps internet connection, and set up a small VM to run WSUS (Microsoft's in-house patch deployment system) so I have one central server hosting all the updates locally.
It saves me a lot of bandwidth and grief - I especially like seeing the patches transferring over to my machines at LAN speed.

Unfortunately I don't think there's any way to get it running on a non-server OS. You don't even have something that gives you access to it such as MSDN?
WSUS is one of those built-in server roles like any other - and probably one of the easiest ones to configure. I had been curious about it for years, but finally decided to learn about it about a year ago--I just read some quick walkthrough from somewhere, and it was up and running well within an hour, and it's definitely worth the disk space you have to set aside for it, IMO (< 40GB in my case, for all the update categories I checked).
