You gotta love the government, they change the driving licence here in the UK (twitter - dvla[^] ) as you can see you don't have to keep the paper part of your licence from today.
Then when you go to this site to View your driving licence information[^]
So far I have been greeted with a 500 and 404 errors.

It works for me - and told me when I passed each of my driving tests!

That one reason I'd thought I'd look, see what information was correct, I've tried it from FruityFox latest version, Chrome latest version even Opera 27 and get all these errors.
I was brave and I fired up IE but let not talk about that one.
I'm now going to stick we the consiparcy that I don't exist according to our goverments

Chrome worked for me [Version 43.0.2357.81 m (64-bit)]
Interestingly, I has an "eye correction required" limitation on it, which is odd (since I'm "borderline" to need glasses to drive according to the optician at my last eye test: to which I say "B*ll*cks! If I don't need glasses how little can you see in order to have to wear them?" I can't read the names of towns on road signs without the damn things!)

I still have my valid UK driving licence from years ago. A funny bit of folded, mostly green, paper with no photo. It was supposed to be valid until I was 70 - which is still many years away - so what do I do with it now? Will I have a new online record somewhere?
...and what is this "National Insurance number"? I don't remember having anything like that - I left the UK in 1990 and haven't worked there since. I brag to my US colleagues about how the UK doesn't treat everyone like a number but like people, by name - unlike the USA, where everything is done with a Social Security Number (SSN).
Do I just have a bad memory or is this something new?

I'm in the same boat - left sunny Aberdeen in 93 and still have my old UK licence, complete with holes where the folded corners got worn away! Expires in 2035.
I not only remember having a National Insurance number, but I also remember the number itself - just as well since I have no idea where the card is! As far as I remember it was on a small card, not unlike the Social Security card...

Aha! Now we are getting somewhere. I left in 1990 and don't remember the little number card you describe, and you left in 1993 and do remember it, obviously. So somewhere between those dates big brother took over the UK!

No, Im pretty sure I had that card / number for a long time before 93. I have a vague feeling that I got it when I was 18 or 16 or something like that. Pretty sure I had to use it when I had summer jobs at Uni (83-85 and 87-90 - don't ask!).
