I'm not trying to be difficult, really I'm not.
The point is - how much does the public know about Barry's personal life? I'd estimate almost nothing - almost the entirety of what one has on which to base a personal opinion of him is of a political nature.
With that in mind, it seems that any change in opinion poll ratings can only be due to events that are political in nature. The only time I imagine a discussion of the same type as yours going anywhere in the lounge is when people ignore the elephant in the room.

PS. He did see the opening and closing parentheses! Hence the question about being a C programmer.
