We got home last night and frankly, I am knackered. The whole trip back from Durham to Woking was accompanied by heavy, persistent rain. We stopped for a few hours in York, it rained, which is a lovely city. Anyway we're home, Mrs Wife is back to work and I am waiting for the girls to awaken.

The northeast was very enjoyable and I would recommend the Redworth Hall Hotel[^], it was so relaxing and refreshing. Every morning we'd swim before breakfast and then a day of touring around. Then in the evening another swim before dinner. The restaurant has a very good menu and the bar is well stocked.

For New Year, the hotel had a Masquerade Ball to which she and I attended. All the 'great and good' were there including a couple on our table that had an uncanny resemblance to Ashley and Cheryl Cole; even down to the tasteless tats and threads. Our favourite though was a [we think] lady who had a daring backless dress, not the best choice considering she had the shape and size of a brickie. Dead | X|

I think I can say we will return. We may well give 'The Toon' a miss next time, but most of what we did was very enjoyable.

I have to do the post-Christmas tidying today and a glass or seven of fortification would be of great use. My best guess is that there are four loads for the washing. Then some poor bugger needs to run a hoover over the house and the car is filthy inside and out. Plus, there is little or no food left so I'll to do some shopping too.

Theoretically, the girls could help me.

I like hotel recommendations. Problem is I remember I had some friends at University who were from Durham and I couldn't understand a word any of them said. Perhaps a slight exaggeration but a lot of what was said was lost.

Turns out you don't need to be able to verbally communicate to enjoy a beer together.

Agreed - I once visited my brother in Plymouth (we are from Liverpool, but he has spent 30+ years there since joining the Navy in the 70's) and we went out for a few beers to one of the pubs near the docks. I stood with his mates for several hours, nodding sagely at their utterances, understanding bugger all, but still had a great night.

BTW, I noted a reference by yourself to time in Guildford. I too have done that shopping trip, up and down the bloody cobbles only to end up in the first shop.
