Restore points worked very well on Windows 7, and basically not at all on Win 10.

If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about?
Help me to understand what I'm saying, and I'll explain it better to you
Rating helpful answers is nice, but saying thanks can be even nicer.

Restore points are and always have been as useful as a bike to a fish.

Me too. Once. In 19 years.

That statistic is useless without context. It helped you once in 19 years, out of how many times you needed it to help you?

Yep, my bad. About 30-40 times - early 2000s were great.

I recently had a situation with BSOD & restore point also.
First of all, my BSOD occurred immediately after attempting to install WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux).
Rebooted and critical BSOD occurred that couldn't be fixed.
Then the process of getting to a fixed point -- ala Restore Point -- was absolutely terrible!
All of the options that were offered were unhelpful and confusing.
Finally, I saw the choice of restore point -- but it was from a backed up restore point that was not on my machine -- tied to my account.
I had to use my phone to get a special code which was like 64 characters that I had to type into my blue screen to tell it I wanted to restore.
Also the computer name was completely different ( i have three win10 machines I manage) when I logged into my account even though it referred to the correct machine name in some places.
I finally got it to restore but it was absolutely crazy and I've been working with Windows since Win3.1
I feel sorry for new users. Or, maybe this is modern confusion that is somehow clearer to them.
My point is that the BSOD & restore point stuff is terribly confusing and odd and I don't know why they don't have local restore points like they had in the past.

Question - how did you upgrade to the current major version of Windows (7, 8, 10)? If it wasn't with a clean install you're asking for trouble.

This machine came virgin from the maker with a clean, bloatware free, virgin Windows 10 Professional installation. It *has* had numerous upgrades over the years, but if there is rot, it's from Microsoft.

here you go Microsoft, your yahoos take the cake: clowns[^]
So, I'm starting to get a handle on the BSODs I've been suffering from. Thinking hard and asking myself what changed? Well, it just so happens that Microsoft pushed out to me 21H1. Now, we all know that when one has a latptop, the laptop maker inevitably has to tweak some drivers because, well just because. Enter Windows 10 where some Microsoft clown decided that users really didn't mean to turn off driver updates. No, they must be mistaken. . Low and behold, 21H1, turned of my "don't $#$%^$&^ with my drivers setting" and updated my Synaptics driver (and in the process completely hosing it).
The Synaptics driver for my laptop is very temperamental and does not suffer updates from Microsoft at all. Updated the driver to the oem version, and turned off driver updates.
But wait, the clowns are not finished yet. If you go to the location where you turn off this setting you come to this little dialog under System Properties:
"Device installation settings
Do you want to automatically download manufacturers' apps and custom icons available for your devices?
Yes (recommended)
No (your device might not work as expected)"
Note that there is NO mention of device drivers - just "apps and custom icons".
Microsoft clowns. It's gone from being stupid to just plain lunacy.

The average user doesn't know what a device driver is. It's all part of the dumbing down of the user interface.

sadly, I agree. But changing settings without alerting people, rebooting machines, etc - clownish.

There is - we are told by educators - no such thing as a "wrong answer".
But if there was, that would be it!

Oooh! Ruriko (a Japanese girlfriend I lived with for a while in the 90's) made lovely Tempura Prawns ... light, crisp batter, even vegetables were good when she did them that way ... I remember them even now.
