Never cared about the Olympics, never will.
What I do remember from my high school years is that it allowed a girl with "Olympics aspirations", shall we say, to miss a lot of classes for training - and I mean a lot...and it made some jealous. All for...well, let's see...in the best case scenario, she'd get a medal, and perhaps a one-year contract with Disney to be part of their parades where she'd get to wave at people while wearing said medal.

I have massive respect and admiration for the athletes, coaches and the families and friends that support the insane efforts they make to push themselves to be the best. Not just the best in their country or the World, but the best that's ever been. The willpower, the sacrifice, and above all the shear focus of will is incredible.
However, it seems ego and commercialism has taken front seat to common sense. I understand that training plans are done in a way that an athlete will peak at a certain date, and changing the dates can and will affect training (and lifestyle, and funding, and jobs...) but it will affect everyone equally.
Why not simply say "We're still not OK. We can wait". Let's have a celebration of health and vitality rather than doing this thing while the world is still very much in the grips of the pandemic.
cheers

Yep. 71 Covid cases linked to Olympics already, and Japan in the grip of a fourth wave ... just pointless - it's all about the money (and not getting caught cheating drugs tests or you lose that revenue stream).

One thing in favor of doing it no matter what. A lot of the infrastructure they build, especially the housing, is repurposed after the games. There could be a lot of people in Tokyo waiting for the competition to be over so they can move in.

I've lost interest in all sports over the past few years. Between rule changes for "safety" and these overpaid participants whining I have other things to do.

I begin to understand how a lot of the Japanese feel, Queensland just landed the 2032 olympics. It will probably bankrupt the state. Hopefully we will have got control of the pandemic by then.

I don't see the point now that it is so highly commercialised. I feel that the commercialisation perverts the supposed essence of 'sport'.
And this Olympics in particular might have been better of being cancelled entirely (which I admit would leave Tokyo in particular, Japan as a whole, and a lot of sponsor very badly out of pocket).
Didn't the Japanese Emperor rather dis the games, despite turning up to open them? Ah yes, he did: He observed that there was a risk of spreading Covid if the games went ahead. That strikes me as something of a very understated but significant criticism. It was unacceptable for him to refuse to open the games and so he did his duty but it was clear that he didn't like the under the circumstances.

If Ozzy Osbourne passed out on stage, did he rock himself to sleep?

And would he then roll off the stage?

That's a Crazy Train of thought, but I Don't Know the answer. It'll be a Revelation when I know for sure.

The simpler explanation might be that it's just age-related...

He's still alive?
I thought he and Keith Richards were wax dummies they just propped up on stage.

To answer that we need to start with defining 'alive'.

I'm 72 as well. I have bad teeth, Sciatica, Epilepsy (started 2 years ago), cardiac issues, I could go on but I'd just depress myself.
I agree with you.
Oh, and I'm going bald too. I envy them for that.
It's Hell getting old, and I'm starting to wonder if it really beats the alternative.
