Thought I would give a slow cooker as a christmas present to my uncle, but he did not want it:
"I'm too impatient for that" he answered.
It seems I'm the only slow cooker enthousiast in the family ...

Come on, when people are reticent like that... you have to take it slow!

Chuck a beef stew in there and let him see how little effort it takes to produce a lot of good food: that may help convince him.
They are also great for chucking a gammon joint into and having "sandwich filler" on tap for lunches.
I think I'm on my fourth now ...

Fourth gammon or slow cooker?

I've lost track of how many gammon have been through the current SC, never mind the previous three!
The current one is different: it's a Morphy Richards, and the pot part is non stick metal - so it goes direct on the hob to seal and brown meat which is very handy. Brown the meat, cook the onions in the fat that renders out, and you are keeping all those lovely "burnt bits" and meat flavour in the food - at the expense of a little "thermal mass" in the pot itself.
I'm seriously thinking about getting an electric pressure cooker having seen them on Ozzie Masterchef but I don't know how much use I'd make of it ...

Could you put the pot directly on a gas hob ?

Yes, I think so - it's Aluminium and I've had no problems on a ceramic hob.
All the heating elements stay in the "body", while the "food pot" lifts out easily.
They don't make the exact model - probably so if you need a spare they can say "they don't hold them anymore, buy a new one" - but this is pretty close: Morphy Richards Sear and Stew Digital Slow Cooker 3.5L 460015 Red Slowcooker : Amazon.co.uk: Home & Kitchen[^]

They have their uses, but I prefer food that is "fast cooked". I don't mean microwaved, just cooked on the stove or in the oven. IMO, food tastes better that way.

Behind the curve ... we're all "dry frying".

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it. Happy holidays to all.
Himself and I were planning on spending today with the in-laws, but we got a once-in-a-blue-moon white Christmas. It just doesn't happen here, but it happened here good and hard today.
My in-laws live in the middle of a 20 acre plot of forest, itself nestled just south of the middle of nowhere. Getting there in good weather requires navigating a switchback.
Getting there any other time requires all wheel drive.
And in the snow? What a mess. We may try if the snow backs off, to at least have dinner with them.
We didn't really plan for this. Oh well. Maybe chains and determination will see us through.
If not, and we end up stuck out there, then we'll be on satellite internet and maybe even generator power until the roads clear up.

Growing up in the mountain (until 12 years old, when I moved to much warmer climate) snow capped Christmas conjure the innocent happiness of youth for me!

Actually, the weather got worse, and we canceled the whole thing. We had a scare for a bit because we hadn't heard from my father in law, who was headed home, but it turns out he made it, but was helping some stranded motorists in the area using his tractor and wasn't near his phone. The little private roads out there aren't so good. Anyway, it all worked out.
Good thing there are 11 more days of christmas though, because this one was a bust!

I live high up in the rockies. Snow starts around Halloween but not this year. Our 5 world-class ski resorts got oh a few inches here and there but Friday morning we woke up to a fresh foot for Christmas.
......And a snow blower that won't run.

Still a wish of mine to take a trip on the Rocky Mountaineer, who knows maybe my wish will be fullfilled next year if I win the lottery

I just managed to travel to the deep south of the Netherlands where my mother lives on a clear day.
Did not want to drive in the icy weather conditions that were forecasted for today

Yah. Got a note from my sister who lives in Homer AK - she just topped out at 5 feet of snow. Luckily she is now working from home until they lay her off

I haven't had a chance to do any programming for years now, but now a need something I think I can do myself. I know I could, easily, years ago, but now?
So last night I downloaded and installed SQLserver and Visual Studio. OMG! It's all changed drastically!
I'm going to have to go back to school just to work the UI! Oh, well. Next year is almost here, and it's got to get better...
Have a Merry Christmas, or whatever you like to celebrate, all of you!
