It seems like nobody is doing Windows end user oriented applications these days. Multimedia applications (Winamp, Corel draw etc) don`t take the center stage anymore. Is it all about severs now? I imagine there is no proper Windows application being developed now a ways except if it`s another dinosaur reiteration (MS Office, Corel package etc.). So the only binary that`s still being produced is related to non Windows OS`s.

Um ... have you tried using Fusion 360 on a phone recently?
Photoshop?
Corel Paintshop Pro?
Teams?
Zoom?
I suspect there is a fair amount of Confirmation bias[^] - the sheer number of apps you see advertised for mobile devices make it look like they are more important, more prevalent.

With some work you can get any piece of software initially thought for Windows to run on any device with a processor and some RAM. But I didn`t had phones in mind when I made my post. Phones aside the remaining pie is made of 1 proper Windows apps (dinosaurs), 2 software meant to be run a web browser and 3 server/alternative OS software.

A UWP app runs on Windows, Xbox, Tablet, Hub, "mobile", ... The only limitation is imagination.

tight corners, I hate them.
It was really the 'cloud' that I was looking to get an insight into. It seems that the cloud is just same data with several parallel access interfaces. Each interface is specialized with dealing with Internet requests coming from a certain type of device.

Luckily there are recent Windows application development projects too.
Although I played with the thought of porting that to .NET 6.0, I still am not satisfied enough with the current state of .NET 6.0. It does not support the trimming option anymore (which was present in .NET 5) to slim down the .exe size for instance.

Hmm. Windows desktop applications are ubiquitous in industry as controllers for machinery. Four of the six products on this[^] page run control software written for Windows by a team including yours truly. This is a single, isolated example.
Mobile and web applications haven't quite subsumed the world yet.

All “desktop” apps are written in JavaScript, run on an embedded browser, and are bundled with an in process web server and embedded datastore/DB if needed.

The bad thing is that this is referred to as 'progress'.

Hi.
Just had a look at the images from the James Webb space telescope and Wow! I miss the APOD posts (and Darlek Dave and Nagy Vilimos) ...

I second this. Someone put their hand up please. We need our astro-porn.
[And I can't wait to see how that will be answered. Should I edit...?]

I seriously hope you're not referring to Astro[^].

Isn't this picture a violation of that copyright?

I expect the APOD people got permission from the owner. If they asked me for permission for a photo of mine, I'd sure give it. Free publicity.

Just stumbled across this. Not a bad game, actually. Try without looking at a map, just visualise it.

I was doing it for a while, but there were too many of the games that were islands. I'm just not good at figuring out which is more West - Christmas Island, or The Bahamas.
(I changed the two islands above after I lucked out and actually guessed today's game in 1)

I think my main problem is going to be distances - I tend to think of the Mercator Projection, which gets wildly inaccurate near the poles ...
Oh, and being unable to spell many of them, of course.
