I've worked at places where they did data analysis - read-only stuff - based off the backups. On a different machine, different storage medium, so no impact on production performance. Using the backup also meant that the data only had to be copied off the live media once, and also meant that you were verifying the backup was valid + readable. (In fact at one shop, a LONG time ago, the backup medium was physical tape and there was a 3rd party product that allowed you to write database-like queries - several of them - and run them all on one pass of the tape.
So not necessarily as daft as it sounds... ?

I used to do similar Derek (query mainframe tapes ) using a tool called ACL ( I believe it stood for Audit Command Language ) it had a scripting language that was very techie to use but incredibly powerful. You could even do bit manipulation - and this was in the glorious days of EBCDIC - good fun though.

AHREFS[^] is amazing.
Serious, free, offers plenty of data and in its Site Audit tab you can get valuable information on what to improve in your site.

Might be worth posting here: Free Tools Discussion Boards[^] - it won't "scroll off" as quickly as it will in the Lounge.

It keeps on refusing posts, it did it at 05:30 this morning for a about an hour, then a short spell a few minutes ago which lasted only a short time.
DB problem perhaps?
Anyone else seeing this?

We've been having some intermittent SQL issues that we are tackling.

I thought it felt DB-ish.

Probably just overworked and tired. Perhaps a little Vivarin in their water bottles would help...
