That, whether true or not*, is of far less import than the fact that an elected representative of the people felt compelled to resign his post because of an unlawful, undemocratic campaign, which was callously orchestrated by members of an organisation whose job it is to protect the law and the democratic principles of the nation.
IMO, the officers involved should be charged with treason, even if Mitchell is a tory.
* Probably not. During the fuss about expense claims, he was all but ridiculed for claiming tiny amounts for simple office supplies, not for claiming fortunes for floating duck palaces.

I first saw them at Surrey Uni around 1985-86 in their previous incarnation (Terraplane[^]) and they were damn good even then.
