The problem is that I didn't even realize VLC could apply transformations to a file, and actually *save* the results to a new one. In that case, then yeah, it absolutely makes sense that it could produce a corrupted file.

You CAN[^]. Although I admit that it is not common knowledge.
I interpreted you post as though you thought it was I myself who just wanted to view the movie, though... And in that case it would of course suffice to rotate the output directly and not bother about the file.

I completely agree (and so does Tom Bergeron btw), but I didn't record it to start with and it's a little hard to fix in retrospect... As I mentioned: The person who did it shouldn't be let near electronic devices...

Northern California, 89 F, that's 32 C for your poor Europeans suffering over there. And its 6:30 in the evening.
Have to say that coming after the three weeks of rain, the place is looking absoloutely stunning, green, lush, verdant, a deep blue sky, with wall to wall sun. And the chilled chardonnay isn't bad either!

You beat us by a bit. We topped out today at 38C (100.4F). The winds are out of the southwest which makes it feel a whole lot hotter.
We are getting some rain recently (first in 4 months) which has brought the temperature down a bit. A week ago we were getting 39C-40C (102F-104F) during the day.

In the middle of Germany we had about 4° C at 8:30 in the morning. But at least it's sunny.
