I recently found out that most red light cameras in Columbus, OH are operated by a private company who gets most of the profits from the fines, and the Police Department gets a percentage.

Yeah, I've read a few stories recently about that. I hear they're being successfully challenged in most cases. And it looks like the OH State Legislature is going to outlaw there use.
Glad I no longer live there since 35+ years.

I never doubted it. Except maybe when an accident has occurred or running a stop sign (like I did once).

In college I studies OBDII (the technology for computers on vehicles) and found that they were talking about implementing a feature in a future version of OBD (on board diagnostics) to report your speed at various checkpoints along the road.
So, if you were driving around and passed a sensor on the road going too fast your own car would report you to the police and a ticket would be in the mail before you even got home. Luckily, they haven't implemented that yet.

No doubt there would be a "black" market for disabling and/or distorting such devices.

Or guns.
When they first put up the cameras on the light poles to do speeding tickets where I lived in California, after a while some people just shot them.

LOL. That could result in a much worse charge and punishment than a traffic ticket.

All fines are about money, nby definition. Jail time or license suspension would be a deterrent.
You'll never get very far if all you do is follow instructions.

PIEBALDconsult wrote: fines are about money True, but not all infractions or charges are about raising revenue, like most traffic tickets.

I'm sure if I were to name one that you'd argue that it's primary purpose is about raising revenue. And I might agree with you if it were a common event like traffic ticketing. But robbing a bank, for instance, is not a common event, at least not with the frequency of traffic tickets. Even some traffic tickets, especially those associated with traffic accidents, are not primarily about raising revenue.

Yes, there's a fine for bank robbery, in conjunction with jail time.

No none of this is about that.
Ticketing to increase revenue is a direct revenue increase. Thus the government entity gets more money. Corporate jails cost the government more money. More inmates means less money for the government.

In the world of big money, corporations and government agencies - one tends to find that, strangely enough, those working at the top of government agencies often happen to find themselves with places on the boards of those corporations when they retire.
