Sir Terence David John Pratchett, OBE is 66 today.
And as a lover of his books, I'd just like to wish him a happy birthday, and many more to come.
(And a cure for his Alzheimer's would be good too)

Happy birthday! He's books are just great.
(My granny had Alzheimer, and the doctor told that she has to use the her brain more intensively - so maybe all Terry Pratchett has to do is writing more books!)

Regrettably, in his own words:
"After falling out with his keyboard he now talks to his computer. Occasionally, these days, it answers back."
He now dictates his books either into his computer or to his assistant, but since he can't read the screen(s) any more, his assistant has to read them back to him at the end of the day. This understandably slows his writing...

He is my favourite author eva.
When I was :cough:, my then girlfriend asked me to get her a book as I worked near to a bookstore, it was Equal Rites and she carefully explained the spelling. I bought it and read it straight through that evening. When I gave it to her, oh err misses, she told me I should have read the others first.
So, I went out and bought them all. Every last bugger of them. Raising Steam is waiting to be read, dear daughter bought it for me for my next birthday so I must wait until the summer.

That is "an embuggerment" - it's a good read. I'll give no spoilers, tho!

The only person I know that can produce written Slapstick (see Moving Pictures).
I literally fell out of bed laughing reading "Guards!, Guards!"
Also, his use of footnotes is amazing.
(from memory_ " ... there is a difference between erotic and pornographic. Erotic is using a feather. Pornographic is using the whole chicken." or " He was 17 and drunk. Many consider this to be redundant ..."

Yep! And some of Soul Music as well:
"Smoke was coming out of the stricken piano. The Librarian's hands were walking through the keys like Casanunda in a nunnery."

Before, when I unplugged the AC charger for my laptop Windows would automatically do theme related things like disable transparency etc. but now when I unplug it, it stays the same theme as before
Anyone know how to fix this? I've tried resetting the theme in the "Personalize" section of the Control Panel.

What does plugging or unplugging of the adapter has to do with the theme change ?
Thanks,

It disables all the fancy theme effects to conserve battery power?

It's the default action on Windows 7, which is why I'm trying to turn it back on. Something must have happened to turn it off, and it's had a noticeable effect on battery life

Check Control Panel > Power Options > Choose when to turn off display (Edit Plan Settings) > Change advanced power settings.
This may be what you are looking for.
What we got here is a failure to communicate

What's your power plan set to? Maybe you accidentally switched it to "High performance"?

It's stopped working on all the power plans

Either disable the battery hogging eye-candy permanently or don't unplug it. Ever.
Seriously, after trying unsuccessfully to make my home machine sleep, I've pretty much given up on power-related woes.
Have you looked at powercfg (command line) and its zillion options? There may be some hope there but personally I think reinstalling the OS will be faster.

I have a Toshiba 500 gb external hard drive when it is connected to my Windows 7 Pro 32 bit system
the system will not boot
Are there settings in my BIOS I can change or can I change settings in the hard drive so the system does not
think that the external hard drive is a CD/DVD
|
|
|
|
|
Your BIOS almost certainly has a "boot order" setup item. Put your hard disk before external media. (But remember how you did it so you can change back if you need to recover Windows from CD or whatever.)

I do not have a external hard drive listed as an option ?
I have CD/DVD listed first then the internal hard drive then
the USB
I have the same settings on my desktop and it will boot with the
the external hard drive connected
any other thoughts
I have also noticed that I can not eject the external hard drive once I do a backup to it
I have to up plug it or shut the system down to remove the external hard drive
any other thoughts
OH I tried this no results
Plug in and turn on the external USB hard drive
Right mouse click on My Computer
Left click on Manage
Left click on Device Manager
Expand the USB list
Find the USB device for your USB Hard Drive (in my case it was the one that had no description)
Right mouse click - Uninstall
Turn off the external USB hard drive
Turn on the external USB hard drive and let it find and install the driver
It should work

|
|
|
|
Re. the boot order: just to make sure, try set the internal hard drive as the first in the list, then CD/DVD and USB.
|
|
|
|
|
Absolutely!
Always have Internal HDD as the first boot source, never USB: you don't know what the heck a random USB is going to boot if you leave it plugged in...
