@BillWoodruff is in Northern Thailand - so I'm guessing a meet is out of the question, it's about 400 miles IIRC - but he should have better info than most of us do. He may still be up and around...

The military has declared martial law so expect to see them around town.
I do see soldiers out on overpasses and at major intersections, but did not have any difficulty getting around.
I didn't go near any protest sites which is why it was pretty much business as usual.
Planning to return to the province in the morning. We don't expect any travel restrictions as long as we stay away from protest sites, which we intend.
As long as you stay away from the protests you should be okay.
Having said that things can change at ant time so there is no guarantee.

Do you know where in Bangkok you will be staying?

yup, Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit, 189 Sukhumvit Rd, แขวง คลองเตย เขต คลองเตย กรุงเทพมหานคร 10110, Thailand
you indicated returning to the province - if you were in 'town' I'd buy you a drink, but, given the circumstances, that may be difficult

Be careful in that area. Get up to date information from the hotel before you venture out.
I seem to remember seeing something in the paper in the last two weeks that mentioned the Khlong Toey area of Sukhumvit when my wife was going to stay at a friend's house overnight. Soi 23, you're at Soi 13-15.
She met me the following day in Pin Klao (other side of Chao Phraya River) and didn't have any trouble.
The situation has changed since then so I don't know where the current demonstrations are.
Just be sure to ask if there is anything going on before you walk around.

well, just between you and I, I wasn't planning to 'walk around' - use the gym for an hour or so both days, but not really leave the hotel
thanks for the info

I don't know if you have been to Bangkok before but there some places that are worth seeing -- Royal Palace, Reclining Buddha, Wat Arun, Royal Barge Mueum, etc. come to mind -- but I can understand that venturing out when things are dodgy can be dangerous.
I remember seeing soldiers on Sukhumvit during the 2006 military coup d'etat. It made the coup real, not an abstract thing. It was a bit intimidating.
Thanks for the offer. Maybe next time.
Hope you have a good stay. The hotel is one of the nicer ones in BKK.

As you may or may not know it is officially a coup d'etat now. The military has suspended the constitution and taken over the government.
Your tour company should make other arrangements instead of coming to Thailand.
Good luck.

Hi Garth, I'm in Chiang Mai, in the north. Your hotel, between Sukhumvit Soi 13 and 15, is theoretically, without traffic jams ... in practice, of course, depending on time of day/night, there are always traffic jams in Bangkok ... about 27 minutes away from Suvarnabhumi International Airport which is where I assume you'll be flying out of to continue your journey, and a warning has gone out that roads to the airport could be "congested:" [^].
I'd recommend, if possible, that you try and cancel your booking at the Softiel(great hotel), and book into a hotel at, or near, Suvarnabhumi Airport. I have been trying to reach a friend in Bangkok (who was born in Thailand, and has lived here all his life) by Skype to ask about the possible location of the current demonstration sites and the Sofitel; if I can reach him, and get any relevant information, I'll e-mail you.
yours, Bill
