I guess it comes to all programmers after a while, our job is so unhealthy, I got flabbier and flabbier, my back started aching from sitting, and since I quit the fags (that's cigarettes on this side of the pond) I don't go up and down the stairs 10 times a day either. So I started going to a gym 3 days a week.
Its only for about 40 mins each session, full body, 3 sets of 10 reps with the weight set so the 31st rep is impossible; its a routine I was shown when I did gym work 20 years ago, and I have to say, the results are astounding.
Perhaps its the 2000% increase in exercise, but after just 2 weeks my back is far better, energy levels are up, the flab shrinking slowly and muscle bulk returning to my enfeebled torso.
The routine is squats, pull downs, rowing, situps, flies, bench press and curls by the way. As you can see its very simple.
And despite losing flab, I have kept my 48 inch chest! Result!
So, I can recommend it. Doesn't take long, and gives good results.

I had a therapist tell me years ago that there are only two muscles that keep us erect, out stomach and back muscles so if our stomach muscles are not toned it puts all the strain on the back muscles. I had terrible back trouble and took his advice and toned up and have never had a problem since.

Yeah, seems completely obvious to me, but in the country I live in, it's a politically charged issue. On the other hand as someone that has studied physics in depth, human production of CO2 and global warming is just as much of a no-brainer, so better take that to the soapbox as well.

No, I'v had a few surgeries and things drop much faster then you would imagine, as well as getting winded walking up stairs.

Glad to hear it. More devs should take their health seriously. The body is just not designed to sit down so long like we do. Two things typically happen over the years, the hamstrings become inflexible and too tight which throws the pelvis out of alignment and causes lower back pain, and the spine isn't in its natural curve while sitting and that causes all kinds of discomfort in the body long term.
Exercise is the only way to combat this. No drug or pill or anything science has to say will change this as long as we have the bodies we do, or wait 5,000 years to evolve into sitting species. Personally, I'm just gonna exercise.
When you do exercise, make sure to toss some good hamstring stretches in your routines. Your back and the ladies will thank you for it.

Hi Jeremy, haven't heard from you for ages. You left in disgust a while back, don't blame you, the Lounge gets like that, anyway, welcome back.
I agree, being fit actually improves my coding, I can focus better and am less distracted.
Vis hamstring, I never had problems with flexibility there, I can lean forward a lot and keep my feet flat on the ground but good advice anyway.

Exactly. Same goes with getting off of caffeine. A good night's rest does more to improve my coding than any cup of coffee ever will.

It's probably because you're active then, so even if you're new to lifting it's not like you're starting from scratch ya know.
