Ah, those were the great days of Trek. The emphasis was on the human drama, not the special effects.

Indeed. Plus, because you were drawn into that human drama you often miss the frailty of the sets and the lack of those special effects. Great stuff that still stands up well today.

A week ago or less there was a link on here about a doctor's diagnosis of Bruce Willis's character in Die Hard. They should do one on a new Star Trek movie. I've only seen the first, and I remember being put off by the continual over-the-top dynamics. (Now to upvote Mark's comment - I agree wholeheartedly!)

The one where they sky-dived onto that little platform? If so, I was hoping they'd bounce. High and far. I'm no longer impressed by such effects where they stretch the bounds of reality so far. I'll watch movies like "History of Violence" instead. Or "Shoot 'Em Up". If it is going to be so far over the top at least I can be laughing
