Yes, on 13th Oct 2004 I woke up and didn't have a cigarette - and I haven't had one since.
OK, there was a lot more to it than that: I'm not going to pretend it was simple and effortless. Even with the patches I found it difficult.
When I started, everyone smoked: you could hardly see across the programmers office most days (Heck, you could hardly see across the car if Mum and Dad were both in it for a long journey).
So how many of you do still smoke?
Cigarettes, or eCigs?
If you don't, then did you ever? Or when did you give up?
I'm just being a nosy person, that's all!

It's been 9 years for me. It was tough at first but haven't had the urge since.

I do smoke on occasion, mostly when I feel really bad for a long time.
For me it was always just cigarettes, but always when I quit I have the worst week and that is why I am very
reluctant to start again.
I started in high school and always had these times of smoking a lot or not smoking at all. The longest I smoked regularly
was about 6 months a few years back. Woke up one day and I have had enough of it so I quit. It wasn't easy but I managed.
Haven't smoked at all for about 10 months now. But I have also dealt with some things that were bothering me in the past
so I find it easier not to smoke. In addition I have other obsessions that make smoking something at the back of my to do list.
Also congratulations on not smoking for ten years

Never smoked - so when I got into office with my first job I just got sick...Everyone were smoking and you barely could breath...
But I was fortunate - on the next month I joined the boss decided to pay everyone a guru to help quit smoking...It was successful and we are a no smoking area since...

Just finished rolling a cigarette and decided to click on the thread before grabbing the lighter.
Then I realized the topic.
Hope your curiosity is satisfied now.

I used to walk away, and not smoke by my computer - mostly because the companies I worked for wouldn't let you - and I found it helpful as it broke my "concentration" and let me come at problems from a different direction. Now I come here instead...

no smoking for me.
Watched my brother die of a heart attack at 35 from smoking, I was 15. It was not pretty.
Watched my parents cough up a lung each morning. From age 0 on.
Wondered why when I went outside I immediately felt better. Would spend hours outside in -15(f) just so I could breath.
Watched my dad die at 70 from heart disease, Watched mom die at 76 from lung cancer.
No thank you.

My sincere condolences - my mother and father both died of cancers, Mum's at least was smoking related. And I'm losing count of the friends I've lost to tumours; I'm pretty sure it's higher than the number that have died as a result of motorcycles...
Weird bit was Mum's funeral: we all knew exactly what killed her but the number of people who lit up immediately on leaving the service...

yes on the funeral bit.
And my Sister inlaw. She is a Nurse, really good one. She 'knows' it is bad for her. Yet she does nothing to stop. It really is addictive.
Oh well more caffeine. My addiction.
Oh and congrats and welcome back Griff

Wishing you ten more years; nay, twenty more, thirty, forty, fifty ... more years of non-smoking, healthy life.

I smoked for more than 30 years, gave up nearly 5 years ago. One day I just stopped, I didn't want any more and that was it. I was a bad tempered get for about six weeks but that was the only downside.
What had worked was that I used to buy my cigarettes by the carton and when I had opened the last carton I just decided that I would smoke them until I'd run out. Got through them and that was it.
The only thing I have wavered for is good cigars. Really good cigars. The ones I could never, and still can't afford.

I never smoked, didn't even try. The reason is mostly that my parents both don't smoke, but my grandfather did. I wasn't used to the smoke from home and when we visited my grandparents I couldn't stand the smell. Because of this "contrast program" I could never bring myself to even try a single cigarette.

Congratulations, OG! I quit cold turkey on 27 July 1992. I used to smoke one or two cigs a day after dinner or a cup of coffee. Haven't touched one in 22 years and have no desire to light up.
Again, my hearty congratulations!

I gave up around 20 years ago.
Walked out of the tube station, got into my car and got the pack out ready to light up. I don't know what happened, but I looked at the packet, rolled down the window and threw the packet and lighter out. I have not smoked since nor did I ever miss it or have any cravings and I was a heavy smoker. Must have been ready.
