War makes sense. It's a political game. People have to die for it, otherwise it is ineffective.
They're not gaining anything from the destruction of historic artifacts. They're just doing that because they're insane. The official excuse is something vague about "idols", but no one really idolizes Assyrian statues.

That's pretty bad...
I'm not the least bit religious, so I couldn't speak to the religious significance of the artifacts (Nor do I care)...
But that aside, destroying 2700-year-old statues... Just... no. You just don't do that, war or not.
If this was in Greece and not Syria, would they be trashing the Parthenon because it was built by evil pagans?

Yes. They are working to bring about the apocalypse.
According to my calculations, I should be able to retire about 5 years after I die.

The answer is yes, they will destroy any graven image or idol of any religion, no matter whether it is ancient Greek or Norse gods or whatever. It also doesn't matter if it is considered an irreplaceable historical artifact by the rest of the world.

So sad, their radicalism and terrorism knows no bounds... as Gabriel said in that article:
Quote: Murder of people and destruction is not enough, so even our civilisation and the culture of our people is being destroyed.

I did not think this violates Lounge rules, but if I want to move it: How do you do it, once it's posted here?

I agree, it does not violates the rules here, and soapbox would be the wrong place! Also programmers and so the one who feels to "be god of all" needs to be take into account the reality.

It's not your post but the replies.

You are probably right, but the replies are beyond my control and I cannot delete or move a post once someone has responded to it.

People are stating opinions but not soapboxing, so I don't see it as a problem.
If you're not soapboxing, you don't need a soapbox.

Depends on your point of view. Some soapboxing going on in my opinion but because of the forum its in I have personally left it alone.

Nuh. By definition there is no soapboxing.
No-one is making speeches; people are just stating opinions in a perfectly normal, non-soapboxing way.
Seek problems and ye shall find them, but this thread ain't broke.

Thanks - I continue to have my own opinion.

That is the point! "We" have the choice...yet...and for this "yet" I will fight to the end.

My kid sister was not offended.
But I see what you mean, a little offense can put you in an orange jump suite in a cage ready for some warm hospitality.

Creating such artifacts takes a lot of time and effort, may be months of diligent (team)work. Destroying them takes just a few minutes.

Destroying a country's cultural heritage is fairly standard for psychopaths,
Mao, Pol Pot, Stalin and others have done this throughout history.
By removing references to the people's cultural past these psychos then try and 're-educate' the population with their ridiculous megalomaniacal 'year-zero' ideas.
History shows that it doesn't work in the long run.
It does show what a bunch of uneducated oafs, amongst other qualities, this particular bunch are.

What's really lucky is that there just happened to be a super-spy photographer at the site!
Aren't we incredibly fortunate that he wasn't out trying to photograph things of military interest!
Why do I feel like I'm being bullsh1tted?
Anyone wanna bet against the guys in sheets being western stooges (possibly on a hastily re-worked moonscape set)?
What's most frightening is that:
0. People who are in the right don't need to lie
1. These tiswas characters appear to be nasty enough that there's no need to lie about them.
2. Despite 1 & 2, we're still seeing more bullsh1t than truth.
And everyone wonders why kids, who are just finding their feet and looking for what's right for them, are turning away from the bullsh1t and toward tiswas.

No spying involved. The video was published by ISIS. They are bragging about how they are destroying these terrible (from their point of view) things. The rest of the world does not consider these ancient artifacts to be so terrible.

Tragic, but nothing new. It's just history repeating itself. We've had Iconoclasts[^] in Europe and America too. I think most recently somewhere around 1940? Hitler destroyed thousands of pieces of Jewish or degenerate art[^]. Even now art stolen during WWII is missing and found.
To me it only shows, once again, that human stupidity has no boundaries.
