I've got a Samsung Galaxy S4 with service from Verizon. The phone has recently developed a new trick - when it rings and I don't catch it in time, it switches to vibrate mode all by itself. And if I make an outgoing call, as soon as I hang up, it switches to vibrate mode, again without ever being asked to do so. This ain't right, but who do I holler at?

Samsung! Me and the Missus have new S5's and the kids now have our S4's. All have been upgraded to Android 4.4.2 and they all do this. Happens to me when I touch the phone.
Found that I can't change the volume of the ring using the volume button while it is ringing like I used too. I had to go into Settings -> Sound -> Ring Tone (?) and there changed volume.
Not happy with some of the changes and more so with a couple of changes Samsung Australia have made in the few months before I got the phone.

That's exactly it, Mick. Version 4.4.2 and I get the same crap when I try to change volume, too. This behavior just started a few days ago, after the last updates. Grrrr....

I don't think it's Verizon's fault. Bitch at Samsung. I have an S4 with Verizon service and I don't experience that. Perhaps you've installed an app that is messing with the setting or you've a virus. Gotta stay away from those pr0n sites ya know.

I'm sure that makes sense somehow, but I can't see why you should tell someone to bitch at a company for a problem that doesn't exist on your device.
As the ringer mechanism is integral to the OS (for pretty obvious reasons, on a phone) the OS is obviously at fault, here. Is everyone afraid to say J'accuse at google?

What have they got to do with the system volume control, that is used for the ringer?
I have four android devices; two made by Samsung. Samsung bloatware has bugger all to do with the volume control.
The behaviour of another person on this thread has already pissed me off with it. Don't add to that.

The OP mentioned the volume being muted and set to vibrate after/while making or receiving a phone call.
I don't know what I've done to upset you, but Touchwiz does affect the volume control, believe it or not. But whatever. Touchwiz is more pervasive that it may seem.
These behaviours have not been exhibited by other android devices.

If you look in the android help forums, rather than in a help forum for Windows developers, you'll see that similar behaviour has been reported for numerous devices.
It's only Windows developers here who have said that it only affects one device -- the same Windows developers who said that anyone who uses a help forum is an idiot who should not allowed to use a phone (unless it's CP, of course. Help forums that are used by people with such arrogance are obviously useful, and you're not an idiot if you use one of them; only if you use on that they don't use).

First smart phone? Just joking.
Anyhow, go to your settings. Some aspects of the phone are Samsung and some are Verizon. For instance, I have a Note 4. I can either use the messaging service via Samsung or Verizon, but not both. I tell the phone this in the settings section.
If this is your first real smart phone, then it can take some getting used to. It can be frustrating at first. With all this said, I love my phone; and it took a while to get used to.

Firstly, Mark Wallace, your phone is "supposed" to be intuitive and easy to use for the "average" person. For you to even draw a comparison between the phone and a complex programming language, is just silly.
This is the lounge, not a help forum.
My point is that I and many, many, many, people that I personally know, young and over 50, have never had to use the forums to learn how to control the volume on their phone. You should not need any help with the basic functions of your phone. So to my comment, either you should not be using smart phones or they were designed by retarded oompa-loompas.
I have been using Samsung smart phones for a handful of years now, and have never had to go to the forums for anything on my phone; nothing.
You and I have butt heads on many topics over the last few years, this debate is no different.

How about the thousands of people who were locked out of wifi because of a ridiculous bug in the android time server software?
The workaround for that *bug* -- which, let us remember, prevented people using wifi! -- was found and reported by a forum user.
How about the thousands of other people who have gone to the android forums to find -- and have found -- workarounds for other *bugs* in the various versions of the android OS?
The solution for the problem reported here may be one of several things, all of which are discussed on the android forums, because this problem affects many people.
The search string android forum phone keeps going to silent mode, brings up lots of such discussions about this particular problem, each of which has either a solution or a workaround, which is far more useful than the responses here, in a forum which is primarily populated by Windows developers.
Let's be clear:
Saying "this is how to fix that problem" is far more useful an answer than "you should be able to use computer that's disguised as a phone without help".

Roger isn't asking about how to simply adjust the volume. He's asking about an anomaly that strikes me as most counter-intuitive, i.e the device 'randomly' switching from ring to vibrate. Maybe you could be more constructive and cite the section for Android help that addresses this peculiarity. I've only ever seen my Android manuals quickly gloss over how to intentionally adjust the ringer volume, or change the ring mode.
