I'd imagine it is common for some sort of bribe in one direction or other then.

Sounds like the premise of a new road trip style comedy.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

Even if selling the format would have covered the costs, it is too late: in Italy they already produced sit-com or something like that (never seen, do not have tv)

Depends - I've had expenses paid by some, not by others.

It used to be the case that companies would offer to pay your expenses in advance. I suggest you ask them; if they are really interested in you then they will probably pay.

Unfortunatley I have strict timings and two days out of office cannot be feasible in these days but on the other hand I could "hire" a friend to share the driving
The additional costs for the plane are already in, euro + euro -.
Additional question:
Is it common practice to ask for reimbursement policies or would I appear as a parvenu (as I am )?
By the way the company is located near Zurich

Considering the fact they asked you for a face to face interview knowing the distance, they should be expecting such questions. at the very least, they shouldn't be put off. And if they don't at least offer a partial recompensation I'd put some thought on what that tells you about the company.
That said, I would be surprised if they didn't offer something: if they're looking for people that far off, they should be willing to invest a little more than a phone call...
On a sidenote, when they ask you what salary you're expecting, do consider that you need at least 3000-4000 swiss franks (more near Zürich) to get by. In fact, you probably wouldn't get a work permit for a job paying less than that because then you'd be entitled to welfare!

Meh, I've done 12 hours at the wheel and still been able to hold a beer at the end of the trip!

Well ... that means that it had been a tough task, since you didn't get a ... (select you the quantity: glass, pint bottle) of gin, if I have correctly understood your preferences

Beer, gin, wine. I'm not too fussed when I've had a long day. Beer has the advantage of killing the thirst as well.

Yeah - I've done a day at work, then ridden a motorbike to Geneva.
But...you aren't at your best, and if you want to make a good impression then going into an interview after that length of drive isn't the top way to get the job. You want to be bright, sober, and ready, not tired, wanting a beer, and with an aching bum...

Jokes apart, I've driven [and ridden] all sorts of long distances and I don't get too fretted up by it. We're even thinking this year of doing the Budapest run is a single hop over night.
No prize for guessing who will do the night time driving...

I don't know. Certainly in the old days, if you were attending for a permanent position, companies would pay travel expenses. If you freelance, it's a different matter.
Telephone them and speak to HR, there will be some policy and they can't hold it against you to find out what it is.

Quote: should I ask the company for a reimbursing policy I would do that, at least you would get an idea of the company attitude.

I'd ask to be reimbursed;
"My travel expenses will be 500 euros if I'm hired, and 2000 if I'm not".

Nice idea, I could make my salary only with interviewing
|
|
|
|
|
In my case (In Germany), Whenever I had the interview with "Big" company, they always send me a reimbursement form to claim for the expense I incurred for attending the interview.
It was my choice to fill it up or let it slide.
cheers,

Is that right that in Germany companies have to do that by law?
|
|
|
|

I am not sure if its by law or not but always I asked if travel cost needs to be taken care or not.
Also the date of interview is flexible. If for some reason if I cannot make it due to prior commitment, I can ask for a change

Thanks to everybody;
Since there was too much thrilling about my decision, I'm going to ...
Attention spoiler
... ask them if they have any reimbursement policy, on the other hand they are very near to Germany and I hope have the same way of doing

They should cover travel expenses.
I had a Face-To-Face for mine and all expenses were covered from leaving the house in ABz to having the interview in Qatar, overnight in hotel (2 nights), food/drink, and of course return travel.

Absolutely! I've never heard of a big (or even medium size) company not reimbursing travel expenses for an interview.
In fact, I'd ask them to pay a hotel room for you so you are fresh for the interview.
