I must admit to considering only known CPers as relevant, I hate numbered accounts for that reason, they get lumped in with the non entities that abound in all forums.

Not an assumption, my good sir! Of course, an average is a statistician's tool, and thus inherently suspect. As the great one said about the categories of lying: "Lies, damned lies, and statistics."
I fully agree with your statement about the numbered accounts. My take is this: CP is a collaborative format, and if someone is not willing to be known, even by an alias, then they're not really willing to collaborate.

In order to solve this I removed the motherboard battery, waited ten seconds, plugged it again and started the computer...
Bios language came in French but apart of that it is working...
Yes, I know it...
I installed a windows 7 into my father inlaw HP computer as I was kindly asked to do so.
Everything went ok.
Today when starting the computer a black screen with some diagnostic messages (memory amount...) appeared the important part of that display is the text:
MANAGEMENT PLATFORM (ME) IN MANUFACTURING MODE
execution of delay in post (originally it was in Spanish)
Press ESC key for the start menu (originally it was in Spanish)
When the ESC key is pressed nothing happens.
The only thing I can imagine of is to reset the bios to some factory values, but... would you suggest anything to solve this? What would you do?
PS: please don't suggest to leave the country or escape my inlaws in case they speak about computers...
Thank you all!

OK, if those options are out, I suggest divorce, so they are no longer your in-laws.
(But on a serious note, did the battery that powers the nvram for the bios crap out?)

Don't know Marc, but after removing it and mounting it again it started working again...

Yes, I saw this link before... it doesn't help at all as the keyboard gets dead...
I simply unplugged the motherboard battery and plugged it again after 10 seconds and it worked again...

on the older systems that is how you clear the forgotten password,so perhaps thats what it did.

Yes, but unless my father in-law did something really tricky to make the bios collapse or I still don't understand what happened here, but... working now so 0 worries.

It seems a hardware issue, if it is still under warranty you can send it for fix or replace.

No warranty...
I've removed the battery on the motherboard... mounted it again after 10 seconds and voilà! Now it works...
No idea how this happened but it works so...

Freemake Video Converter just updated - which is fine, it's a good freeware video converter, it works. I find it generally produces a sharper output file than Handbrake, and is loads better than the several "pay-for" video converters I've tried.
But...even the damn upgrade tries to install "this toolbar", "that tune-up tool", "the other WTF is this anyway?".
And every single one of them defaults to "install".
Does this annoy anyone else, or is it just me?

Yeah...I don't mind the "ad supported" model (provided they are appropriate and not too intrusive, much the way CP ads are) but it's not nice to offer junk and preset the "install" option to "yes".

Agreed. What I'm looking for is an ad-blocker that allows me to filter by the main web page. This would enable me to allow ads through for sites such as CP, but would block them for sites that put the ads in your face.
Any ideas, anyone?
If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack.

uBlock: you can set a "WhiteList" as "codeproject.com" and all pages served for that domain will be ignored by the ad blocker.
It's due an update soon though - some sites seem to be getting through it
