Love the description..
"A great renaissance of public shaming is sweeping our land. Justice has been democratized. The silent majority are getting a voice. But what are we doing with our voice? We are mercilessly finding people's faults. We are defining the boundaries of normality by ruining the lives of those outside it. We are using shame as a form of social control."
Shame used to be a form a social control long before the internet, mainly to discourage the majority from doing things that generally harmed society.
I'm not sure the internet is about that though - it seems to be more about oppressing those with different opinions and forcing everyone to go with the popular view regardless of whether it is right or wrong (or good or bad).
I've always loved technology, but I think the internet has enabled an awful lot of damage to be done to societies all around the world. I'm not sure how we'll recover from it.

I wouldn't worry about AI (especially considering Microsoft's recent Tay debarcle ) but things like the so called "Arab Spring" and the current migration crises have been enabled by social media and instant messaging.

It certainly is. It's an interesting insight into the mob mentality of internet shaming. Some of the people in the book, you end up feeling really sorry for. Others.... well, less so.

Hi All,
This morning while having a shower I happened to look at the plug hole in the bath/shower combo and saw a blurry brown thing. Just to clarify I normally wear quite strong glasses so that was not a major surprise (blurry brown thing). Later when I go to brush my teeth (I am wearing my glasses) I glance over at it...and it's a black mass coming out of the plug hole.
I decide to investigate remove plug find it coated with black gunge and the plug hole coated in a black gunge as well, the shower has been draining away though a very small hole. Further attacks on the black mass reveal it to be hair,<<'vomit'>> black hair <> so in manly fashion I clear this mess and start thinking I have brown/grey hair, my flatmate also has brown hair where did the black come from? , please no!!!

Brown left to rot would turn black, wouldn't it?

Black rat stuck further in the drain possibly? As it's decomposing, its fur could be making it's way back up the pipe..
Or maybe your flatmate dyes certain bits?

I am pretty sure it was hair, black mould doesn't separate to folicals when blasted with water does it....
|
|
|
|
|
Hair is porous and black mould is microscopic so (I think) the mould has turned the hair black.
If you should ever be unfortunate enough to do any work on waste water systems you will find this staining is quite pervasive...

I guess that's why 'they' tried to use cut hair to solve the Deep Water Horizon oil leak. I must say while I have worked in the water industry I have only worked on the supply of fresh water.
