Ahhh - fooey. You're just getting rid of the real competition so those of the last twenty years have anything like a chance.

Out of curiosity: I find that a lot of people are nominating more or less unknown singers. Why?
If they had been the best, then surely they would have been more widely accepted as such, don't you think?

The phrase "..outside the classical tradition..." leaves quite a bit of wiggle room for niche vocalists maybe.

No, most of the best music today is by independent artists. While some of the more main stream performers are indeed good vocalists, they spew out the garbage that the industry steers them towards instead of trusting their own creativity.

Don't think that follows at all. In fact I specifically asked for the best, not the most commercially successful, in the hope that it would raise up some candidates that I had no knowledge of. The record business being the clumsy great machine that it is there is no reason to believe that the cream necessarily rises to the top or gets the backing of the great promotion budgets. Also there are many great singers working in areas such as English folk which have never had the audiences to bring people into widespread recognition. I would put Kate Rusby's "My Young Man" easily into the top ten singer/songwriter recordings of all time, for example, but I doubt that more than a handful of people outside the folk audience are even aware of it's existence (and they heard it from me!)
I am not a number. I am a ... no, wait!

I find Mallika Sundaramurthy has a very good voice.
Anneke Van Giersbergen too - especially if she collaborates with The Gathering or Devin Townsend.

OK, so most male pop singers are gay, so they kinda qualify as female, but that's not the point.

I usually don't care much for vocals, so I don't really have favorite singers. The entire package must be right and a beautiful voice can be really unfitting in certain music.
Putting together this top five was pretty challenging, but fun nonetheless
In no particular order:
Kimbra - Two Way Street - LIVE Studio Session[^] (posted by @BillWoodruff some time ago, became my SOTW after that. That lady has a really very good singing voice).
Solefald - Tittentattenteksti[^] (was my SOTW a few weeks back, say what you want, but this lady (Agnete Kjølsrud, also in Djerv and Animal Alpha) sounds like a maniac, which is exactly what makes her, and this song, pretty awesome).
The Devil's Blood - The Anti Kosmik Magick[^] (Farida Lemouchi sounds like she's somehow slightly off tune which is exactly why her voice adds perfectly to this dark psychedelic satan worship).
Idina Menzel - Let It Go[^] (yes, that song from Frozen which is waaaaaay too catchy! No denying that Idina Menzel has a strong voice with a pretty wide range).
Igorrr - Tout Petit Moineau[^] (this song came to me in a SOTW thread (thanks @RUs123!) and also became a SOTW. Laure Le Prunenec goes from beautiful classical singing to screaming and psychopath, awesome!)
Maybe not the best singers in the world (beauty is in the eye, or in this case ear, of the beholder/listener anyway), but pretty unique and awesome nonetheless!
