I bought a WD external that has code to auto backup. I know this is not free but it did provide storage.

What's wrong with built-in W10 backup?

I would imagine that, because it's been updated by microsoft in recent years, it's bloated, buggy, and unintuitive to use.

On the other hand, if it IS any good and you start to rely on it, they will discontinue it. Or they will change the features claiming 'no one wants to back up to their own hard drive' (that is SO yesterday), so they will surreptitiously redirect the back up to a cloud location which will continue to increase in price. Finally, they will close down their cloud service.

Take a look at windows file history - basically mirrors & versions files from specified directories to another location - I have mine set up to write to an SD card on my laptop and a nas drive....works like a charm for me and completely transparent....when you want to restore a file / folder, just go to the previous versions tab on props dialog
C# has already designed away most of the tedium of C++.

I wonder how many TB do you already have in Backups...
or have you automated a FIFO process?

Manual FIFO (with exceptions for first new OS install and the previous old OS working), but I cycle between 4 by 4TB USB HDD's and can fit around 16 full-image backups on each.
Dailies go to the NAS, which has around 4TB allocated to backups.

It's only the daily incrementals, so they don't usually take much space each.

How do you decide that this and other free software is purely altruistic?
Always a difficult decision but I cannot see how the company earns its money. Maybe its run by a Chinese philanthropist

In this case, the free version is fully functional - I got the full version because I use it all the time and they deserve something for all their effort.
I guess it's the old "shareware" principle: give it away, and if people want to pay you and maybe get a few extra features (AOMEI Professional is "faster" - can't honestly say I've noticed - but does have a few nifty features I haven't used) then that's profit without having to have a huge marketing budget?

How about a scheduled task that runs a one line .bat file? It doesn't get any simpler.
