I was at a meetup.com meeting last night (Dublin Software Craftmanship Community) and we had an interesting discussion on areas where we could see AI being integrated into the development process. For example, AI enhanced code analytics could check your code matches the general idialect of the existing code base rather than relying on hard-rules or your queries and code could be optimised behind the scenes or etc.
Any thoughts - where do you see AI joining you in the code development process?

Try the search engines like Google with some complex search (where the result isnt a clear word match, but a special connection between two words, which meaning is weighted with some other words) and you will see that is a lot of bull-sh*t bingo. So it is full of some day dream believers.
AI may work in simple cases, but when it comes to intelligence it all fails.
PS: in earlier ages it was called "fuzzy logic"

Fuzzy logic certainly is not the last word on AI. There are many different approaches. What about evolutionary algorithms? We do know that evolution has produced systems with a certain intelligence. The real problem may be that the complexity (and the drawbacks of evolved systems) may result in an simulated evolution needing as much time as natural evolution.
Also, evolution takes place in a certain environment and adaptation to that environment is one of the most important parts of evolution. What simulated environment is complex enough to evolve something that is fit for the real world?

This is Javascript. If you put big wheels and a racing stripe on a golf cart, it's still a f***ing golf cart.

"No, from Canada."
If software development were a circus, we would all be the clowns.

My Degree's thesis (Diplomarbeit) was a Fuzzy Software to offline simulation of regulations and online connection with PLC (SPS)
Interesting theme, but you are right... from AI, nothing at all.

If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about?
Help me to understand what I'm saying, and I'll explain it better to you
Rating helpful answers is nice, but saying thanks can be even nicer.

Not at all. AI is a myth IMO. Its way beyond our ability to even understand intelligence, let alone mimic it.

I was thinking at the pattern matching level, not human level intelligence.
For example you could look at running pattern matching over software logs and metrics to generate pre-failure notifications and root-cause analysis for non-linear faulting. Companies such as "Prelert" already do this.

And is this effective? Sounds like its guesswork to me.

There are only 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

Considering that our intelligence is actually just chemical reactions in the brain, we can figure out what drives it. Since nature seems to have a much better understanding of chemistry then we do it might be quite hard to deduce but we will get it eventually.
I consider it a waste of resources to try and recreate animal-type intelligence in computers. I also think that machine intelligence will be hardware based and will have little to do with software or programming unless someone can build a analog processor at 8nm with re-writable logic circuits.

You could run tfs check-ins through Microsoft Cognitive Services to predict when a developer is about to quit and start looking for a replacement before they even leave.

...and I've just watched the first five minutes. (If I watch more, Herself will not be amused, she's at work and want to see it tonight.)
It's looking good. Very good. Like Top Gear with a bigger budget. A much, much bigger budget (there are rumours that the opening scene alone code £2.5M)
Anyone else watched / watching / going to watch?
Bad command or file name. Bad, bad command! Sit! Stay! Staaaay...

Watched already - it gets much, much better after 5 minutes. I would love to have seen Chris Evans face if he watched it. That's how a motoring show is supposed to be run (even if TG should do it on a smaller budget).

I'm quite looking forward to it in spite of being a non-motorist.
Interesting to see Clarkson doing bits on the Beeb again (HIGNFY, QI etc.) - could this mean a possible return of Top Gear one day?

Dunno - I saw an interview with him recently where he was saying:
Quote: When you send Amazon a film, their television people in Los Angeles ring up and squeak with joy. What you never get at the BBC is that - ever.
Because if somebody was to say, 'that was a great thing that you've just done,' particularly if they wrote it in an email, if it turned out to be controversial and the Daily Mail went berserk, they'd be on record as having liked it, and then what would happen?
It's a terrible culture, and all of Britain suffers from it."
If true, I can understand that: you need praise and "attaboys!" to keep you motivated.
