Maybe Word has become better at creating HTML documents, I just remember from the distant past(15+years ago) seeing what Word did when it created web pages -the results were horrendously bloated incomprehensible HTML.

Nope!
You are correct that they are still...

My end result took much hand-editing and they still look terrible.
It was all just to make a book I wrote (Writing Fiction By Example) available for free on the web:

Why are you using such old technology???

Pardon my curiosity, but if you had to advise someone who is just starting out developing websites today, which technology would you recommend him or her to learn?

ASP Classic.
That is a huge question! I've moved to ASP.Net Core 2 Razor Pages just because I like the look of it.

Thanks! My grandson is currently learning Javascript and I suspect the day is near when he will want to learn doing websites.

No problem but please bear in mind that my answer is predicated on my own bias - I think that is the right way to go but there are plenty of other places for him to start.
He could start here, for instance:

It ain't no thang, but here it is - Paddedwall.Org[^]
I turned off the opinions page because i'm starting the search for new employment.
I think it's fairly mobile-compatible, too.

No. It means the web site has existed in one form or another on the same domain since 1993.

If that "opinions page" is what I think it might be, then I never thought I'd live to see the day - JSOP is practicing self-censorship.

That is a rather macabre what-ever-you-may-call-it image, particularly since you are searching for new employment. May I ask your motive behind it given it is likely the first thing someone hiring will see of your site?
[EDIT] I quickly perused your site. It is a mishmash of information. May I ask who your intended audience is?
[EDIT] The main index page should be accessible from the current page (e.g. by way of a menu option or path bread crumbs). This is not possible with your site. The only way to return to the main index page is by clicking on 'paddedwall.org' in the header. You may want to make this change.

I think I might be the only person that visits the site. Beyond that, you may want to re-read the slogan under the sight header.
For the record though, I was already considering a bread-crumbs kinda deal, even though it's redundant once you discover that clicking the site name will take you back to the beginning.

Sorry John. It was my mistake to assume your comment about seeking new employment might be related to your site. Sincere apologies. On another note, congrats are in order for the success in implementing the technologies you referred to. Regardless of which technology is used, I find that being able to implement an app or site is personally gratifying.
Cheers,
Ian

Nice work
Quote: I have this bizarre outlook with regards to writing code - I do it because it's fun. I don't really care how much money I make, or that one day I'll become a manager of some kind - I do it for the pure enjoyment of doing it. It just happens that there are people out there that will pay me to do what I consider to be a hobby. Sure, I've had other hobbies, but at some point I reach a level of proficiency that makes the hobby almost boring. I've found programming to be a whole different animal.

Too late. You must be using Angular whatever version is latest by the time you read this. That's the best thing and it will change the web forever. And by forever, I mean the time they take to release newer version or some cool kid comes up with yet another JS framework.
