... so I go to FleaBay and Amazon to look for a set of 50 more: I buy 50 off Duracell Industrial, because they last well and loads of things use 'em.
"Hang on", I thought. "£1.99 is rather cheap for 50 AA's".
Then I noticed: pre owned[^]
It would never have occurred to me to sell used non-rechargeable batteries ...
Nope, I'll go with new: 50 off for £15.99. Much more like it.

Nah, most the cheap ones are low capacity - 1.2Ah or even 0.8Ah instead of 2.7Ah for Duracell. Their "Industrial" range is the same as the consumer ones but in a simpler package, and cheaper - meant for tradesmen.
My local supermarket sells Duracell AA consumer versions for around £1 each!

Cool - I only need them for remotes or similar.

Remotes, smoke alarms, Herself's TENS machine, the scent spray in the bathroom, the clock in the kitchen, ... the list goes on.
And I hate replacing them too often, so I'd rather get ones that last a while.

They are the Alkaline, so they should be at least 2.5Ah.
We don't get CostCo on this side of the pond (and the normal pricing translation is $1 == £1 by teh time we get to buy things).

I didn't know that - but with only one in Wales, and a 90 mile round trip it's not somewhere I'd start looking for something.

All road distances in the UK are in miles, and speed limits in MPH.
I'm guessing the main reason is the cost of changing all the signs!

Wherever the source, be warned that those "Made in China" can be prolific leakers.* I'm talking about brand name (as if that makes a difference with that origin stamp). Similarly, all the rechargeable I had from there have been trashed. Power capacity could easily be 40% below specified and inconsistent withing the same package.
I've even had Alkalines, with with an expiration date of 2022 leak, unused, in a drawer (fortunately, not onto the wood) just sitting there, never used. At the time, the battery still had about five years on it's clock.
They do come from other source countries (so far, those from SE Asia's are not bad).
* In a device (an old SW Radio), the AA's leaked so bad they leaked through the container and onto the counter.

It would never have occurred to me to sell used non-rechargeable batteries ... I'm always amazed at what people will buy from local "swap-n-shop" sites. I had an outdoor grill that was pushing 15 years old. It was rusty, greasy, the bottom of the cooking area was falling out, one of the wheels was wobbly, and I could no longer get it to lite. All of this was revealed up front. I was going to toss it. My wife said wait, I'll post it for sale. I told her he we'd have to pay someone to haul it off. Two days later I was meeting some guy in a public parking lot to trade the grill for ten dollars. I was floored. People will buy most anything.
