I'd love to be able to do 40GB in 6 hours. This is closer to a full weekend for me.

WoW download is around 40GB, judging from t'interwebs: How big is the Download? - World of Warcraft Forums[^]
Then it expands to 80~90 GB when installed.
So if her / your connection is slowish, or the WoW server she downloads from is busy ... that's a "significant" download size, whatever way you look at it. My internet is 40Mb/sec, so that's ~4MBps, which would be 166 minutes if the connection is clear of other users. It wouldn't take much to push that D/L over 5 or 6 hours during "busy periods".

Well, VS2017 is a 25GB download.

What is that big ? Animations ? Too bad that we have internet and high speed connections, this removes all need for developers to perform optimization. I wish they had to install it personnaly via floppy once as a validation test for the complete software

360K floppies, of course. All 161,112 of them. That's a stack 805.56 feet or 1/4 kilometre tall, and that's a big box: 3 full-to-the-brim shipping containers, plus the glove box of the truck shifting them.
General Failure will chime in on disk number 161,109 - and serves the bugger right!

We do most of our backups to DVD on one of our servers. For a long time I got used to replacing the DVD drive after burning 200-250 discs, or roughly every four months or so. A belt would break and that would be the end of the drive. Marcia, one of our technicians, thought that was horribly wasteful. She disassembled a drive and figured out that the belt was the same size as the rubber bands you could buy for little girls' hair. She started refurbishing DVD drives, and I now have a small stockpile of them. Ironically, the last drive she fixed for me is still in the server. It has probably burned over 1,000 discs in the last two years.
Thanks, Marcia.

I am an avid player of WoW. Yeah, it should not take 6 hours to download and install (laptop or not).
Windows 10 works just fine for me both personally and professionally, so I can't agree with you there.
Just do a clean reformat of the laptop OS. Loading only what she needs, of course. That is what I do on my gaming and dev machines and it works fine.

Well, I can't because she didn't want to fork out $180 for a stand-along copy of Win10 (and I don't blame her).
What I REALLY wanted to do was install Linux and whatever was required to run WoW on that, but she wasn't interested in a totally free OS either.

She doesn't want free, doesn't want to pay. How about a laptop without an OS?
--edit
FWIW, the previous versions of WoW ran on Linux; haven't played since the latest expansion though.

She's retired and on a fixed income. I had to buy her a new laptop because she simply can't afford it. On the other hand, she refuses to recognize that Linux is her best solution regarding monetary outlay.

From the way you word it, it sounds like you'd be installing a pirated copy. That's always strange to hear from a developer who lives by selling the code he/she writes.

No, she's paying for her WoW account (and if she wasn't, I assume it wouldn't let her download it), and windows came pre-installed on the laptop. No pirated software anywhere.
I tried to get her to go with Linux instead of winblows, but she ain't havin' it.

No pirated software anywhere. ..if it is "preinstalled", you still pay for it. Whilst cheaper than a standalone version, it is still more expensive than free.
#realJSOP wrote: I tried to get her to go with Linux instead of winblows, but she ain't havin' it. Create a bootable USB-key and put Ubuntu on it. Install Wine, put a shortcut on there for WoW.
WoW performed better under Ubuntu on my machine, while running Spotify, FF (4 tabs min), and Skype without any hiccups. If you give it a try, you'll get hooked.

I have no interest in WoW. I'm just setting this crap up for my sister. I don't have the energy to argue with her about it.
She insists on using windows.
She insists on using outlook.
She's essentially on her own.
