When I first posted this, this morning, the headline read "raises £4m".
I'll assume that the additional £2m comes from the generosity of CP members.

And the link in your message still says 2m

NINE million!
Apparently, quite a lot of the sponsorships have come from the US, which shows that good people everywhere appreciate good people anywhere.

£17m £18m now. The total went up £4m in a single day during the week. One only hopes the management of NHS Charities Together use the money well. Also hope someone has remembered to ask the Palace for a telegram card for his 100th!

There aren't many things that have made me feel proud of Britain, over the last few years, but this tops the list.

Do questions with multiple question marks annoy you???

As an intellectual or learning exercise, it looks like fun, and I suppose it could, maybe, possibly have some use in security, but it could also make a mockery of your Internet bandwidth, pretty damned quick.
However, "fun to do but pointless" works for me -- name a game that doesn't meet those criteria (and you don't learn anything from playing games).

I suppose that most people know that the Apollo 11 crew left a prismatic reflector on the surface of the Moon. One article (in the days before the Internet, so I don't have a URL) claimed that the first time it was successfully hit by a laser beam from earth, 14 photons came back...
Based on this, when I was teaching at a Tech college, I used to have the students calculate the storage capacity of a light beam reflected from the moon, at various bitrates. The calculation is a simple multiplication, but the result made several students at first think that they had come out three magnitudes wrong by mixing up kilo and mega or something like that. (It is a nice introduction to a discussion of windowing mechanisms on high speed fiber links!)
I also used to spend a lecture on historical computing equipment, where mercury Delay line memory - Wikipedia[^] was one of the technologies that truly fascinated the students. This was actually in practical use (as opposed to ICMP and light beam to the moon storage).
