Plural of magus[^], which can more broadly mean mage, which has become a synonym for wizard in popular culture.

I was just surprised the Grammar Police didn't (incorrectly) pick me up on non-use of an apostrophe!

I was going to ask if you'd forgotten it, but I didn't think you'd make that kind of typo.
Not that it would have helped one way or another.

Thought about it, but then I know you are pretty careful with your punctuation in your clues.

"Magic" is derived from "Magi", so that'll be a "yes".
Start with "Magus" and you'll quickly get to "Magic".

I have a pretty good home laptop which has a problem with Screen. So Of course I use an external monitor and use it.
Over the weekend, I saw the blue screen (no problem ) and laptop restarted ( no issues).
My nightmare is that, My laptop starts, can hear the hard drive humming. Fan running, keyboard Caps lock/Numlock light works, Wifi light is on too.
But, I see nothing in the external screen. No signal comes via HDMI and I don't know what status the windows is after restart?
Cannot reinstall or repair or do safe mode as I don't know where I am with no display.
Any ideas?
cheers,
Super

Have you got function keys for selecting the monitor(s)?
Is caps lock working - or at least the LED toggling?
Do you get any bleep codes?

In the old days, it was something like: Fn-F7
If you can keep your head while those about you are losing theirs, perhaps you don't understand the situation.

Ever considered changing the screen ? I have already changed twice the screen of my FIL's laptop (costs about 80insertyourcurrencyhere). The pain part is unscrewing and rescrewing, all other is really easy.

If it's booting to the desktop (but you can't see it because of the display), then you might be able to RDP into it from another box.
Of course this assumes it was already enabled, and set up to allow it.
This is one of the reasons any "Home" version of Windows is a non-starter. Can't RDP into it, it's no good to me.
At the very least, try to ping it. What next...I'm not sure. Really depends on the nature of the problem.

Judging from all the feedback, it seems you've quite a problem. If none of those help then perhaps you need to apply the following test to the laptop, advice I've been giving for some time (to cut down on being asked for advice):
Find a large body of salt water.
Immerse laptop into large body of salt water.
Release laptop.
- if it sinks then it was seriously defective and needed to be replaced.

I suspect by now you have fixed it, but did you try unplugging and replugging the HDMI? (If 'no signal' you probably did, but worth mentioning). Also, maybe use the 'Windows-Key' and 'P' (for 'presentation'), which will give a pop-up with the following 4 options:
- PC Screen only
- Duplicate
- Extend
- Second screen only
If flying blind, press 'Win-P', the down arrow, Enter, wait, the down arrow again, Enter, wait, and repeat until all four options have been tried. Win10 on my box does NOT close the selection screen when 'Enter' is pressed, so you don't have to continually re-press Win-P.

Have you tried to boot from a CD?
At least with it you will discard all possible software issues since all drivers and OS are not even loaded.
Another advantage is you can boot in its mini OS in another computer and you can check and write down the secuence of keys or tabs to do what you want to do in your "dark mode" pc.
I managed to do a "blind" ghost copy of my parent in law PC to a USB without seeing anything, I checked it in my PC once done and before starting to experiment. At least you don't lose everything if something goes wrong.

I'm a little late to the party, but I have a suggestion.
Make sure all USB accessories are unplugged from the laptop before attempting to boot. I've seen cases where a USB device can stop a laptop from booting even though the device is functional.

...the impossible takes slightly longer.

Selfies is an ubiquitous phenomenon that is sufficiently obsessive that no small number of practitioners have lost their lives in order to gratify this urge and then dispersing the result (if they survive) to an audience engaged in similar activities.
It can most accurately be described as a method of masturbation and exhibitionism.

I think you could say that about a lot of public activities though.
I mean even your post... one could argue you are making yourself feel good by showing off your knowledge of big words.
