That'd be even worse: theobromine is toxic to cats as well as dogs, so Herself would insist on an emergency vet run to have him pumped out and dosed up with a drip for a few days.
Fortunately, cats are rather more picky than dogs and won't eat it if it's left around - though they will if given it as a "treat".

My grandfather had a dog that would eat chocolate at any given opportunity. I have no idea if it's supposed to be toxic for all dog breeds, but in the end that's not what killed him. He lived to be 15+ years old.
My dad was a mechanic and did some work in our garage - that same dog would also be licking the garage floor whenever he saw that bright green engine coolant--or straight out of the drain pan when my dad was emptying a radiator--it's apparently sweet, but poisonous. Didn't bother that damned dog one bit.

I honestly have no idea what breed it was. It was about the same size (looking at some sample pictures), but with longer hair, pitch-black. He lived outdoors, on a farm with plenty of animals, and I'm pretty sure my grand-dad had it since before I was born, and I'm sure I couldn't always have been the most gentle toddler. He was an awesome dog to have around kids.
I hadn't thought about that dog in a long, long time. Suddenly I realize just how much I miss it.

If you check out the LD50 you will see that chocolate it's also toxic for humans. Dogs are capable of eating a higher proportion of their body mass, probably because once they've killed their bison they have to eat it all.
