Good story! I enjoyed GD, but they had some practices that I disagreed with - that's why I quit. After a few years leading a team of engineers (even before I graduated) developing ATE for the missile factory, I got assigned a cool IRAD project. One year later, one of my former team got promoted to Sr. Engineer, while I was passed over. I was told that the reason was that the Sr. position requirements included supervision of others in the past 12 months. My previous supervision years there did not count. It took about a week to find a better job, and give them my notice. They counter-offered me a $1 million grant to continue the IRAD, but I passed.
I later learned from a former coworker there who was in management that there was a secret rating system, not shared with the employee, where I was rated as too valuable in that IRAD role to allow a change of position. That was high praise, but it was a chicken-s... practice that I still consider to be unethical.

chicken s$it indeed. I never got far along enough in Hughes to run into that. I was in ATE as well for multiple programs.
when I was in school working part Time at ITT Satellite, they played off excellent people who "would have no problem finding another job." Hum... We're graybeards though I can't grow a beard. Maybe I'll start a consulting business titled, "WTH are you doing?"

My daughter needs to learn Java (not Java script). I am looking for a good book for a total beginner with no programming experience. My Java books are too advanced.
Can anyone offer any recommendations? Thanks!

I'm always on the look-out for good resources for beginners and younger-beginners because I teach a lot of family (nephews, nieces, etc) that it is easy to program.
Learn Java the Easy Way: A Hands-On Introduction to Programming[^] (No Starch Press) is a really well-written book that eases the reader/learner into Java.
Sets up the background needed for learning.
Eases into JShell.
Continues into deeper subjects & even teaches some UI programming.
Probably one of the better beginner resources out there & No Starch books are often targeted to younger / earlier readers/learners.

I was just about to post this as well. I have a few of the Headfirst books and I have found them all useful, they have a different teaching style to traditional 'dry' text books that I found refreshing.
