So it should be asked in the Guru forum - This is the lounge. What on Earth could give ANYBODY the idea that this is where to find gurus of ANY sort?

Now, you may call me guru.

And am annoyed.
Even before looking at any features.
Why would the update need to reboot TWICE??
An be careful with the prompts on the final reboot. They try to re-enable all the 'send to Microsoft...' options.
And they try to get you to log in with a web account, rather than a local account - again.
Pops up a logon screen that says - "please enter your email address to logon"
Wasn't obvious to me how to logon to a normal local account - but a couple of bashes on the escape key got me back to the normal logon.
Frustrating.
New colours in Metro are even worse - the orange is just awful.
Microsoft - what are you doing??

I can guess at what they are trying to do - which is to leverage their dominance in desktop and laptop space into tablet and phone space - except in doing so, they have completely trashed the reason they are dominant in the desktop and laptop space.
They should have learned from their IE experience - a dominant product will yield to a superior product.
And right now I'd rather use Mint Linux that Windows 8.

Fair point - and one that I hadn't considered.
But comparing them side-by-side (oh, wait I can't do that because Metro is full screen...)
no, Windows is definitely significantly more, and excessively too, orange on Metro.
CodeProject, as orange as it is, is subtle and understated in comparison.

Seriously now, I think you can change the colors, can't you ?
And the whole subscribing stuff has been going on for ages, and has to do with the cloud. I bet you an sync a lot of things with mobile devices if you subscribe... but I hate it. I even refused to install some applications that look great because I did not freaking want to have yet another account.

My biggest annoyance with 8.1 is that it insists on branding my desktop image with the version and build number. PLUS the text "Safe start has not been configured correctly" (translation from Swedish, so the actual English text might differ) - WITHOUT giving me the option to configure the flucking Safe start OR tell me how to do it!
And Google is not helpful in removing the branding either. Doesn't seem like anybody but me cares about the text obscuring the picture of my cats!!!

Ah, this is made that way so you can access the information more easily when calling the hotline

Can't do that. I'm saving it if I should happen to come across an MS support technician IRL.

Not really, but thank you for trying.
The first link seems to be how to get INTO safe startup mode, not how to "configure it" - whatever the hell MS means by that... Please understand that I have NO IDEA whatsoever about what setting I am supposed to configure to get the bloody text to disappear!
The second link, I had found before, but it doesn't seem to apply in my scenario. First of all, it's a hack that assumes that you have a static desktop image (and I have a rotating one), and second of all: There are no such files as transcoded wallpapers and cached files in my windows 8.1 folders.
The tip is written for windows 8 consumer preview, so I can only assume that it has been changed, either in the official windows 8 release or somewhere in the windows 8.1 development cycle.

There may be a registry setting then that enables it then.
I may just have to look into it further then.
I guess I don't understand what you mean by Configure.
You either start a system in safe mode or you don't.
You don't normally need safemode unless you are troubleshooting something.

Hi,
There is no watermark in the Retail build.
If your watermark looks like this[^] then you have test signing enabled. You can remove the watermark by simply enabling driver signing with 'bcdedit.exe /set TESTSIGNING off'
If your watermark looks like this[^] then you can get rid of it by changing the 'PaintDesktopVersion' registry key located at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\ to '0 '
Best Wishes,

None of the tips worked for me. I've still got the flucking watermark...
But thanks for trying

Looking into it further I discovered that that setting for disabling it does nothing on the Eval version of windows 8 enterprise no matter what you set it at.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
PaintDesktopVersion data 0
This should disable it but does not.
digging deeper the process that actually sets it seems to be in shell32.
CDesktopWatermark::s_PaintWatermark
I have verified the the build number is coming from the registry by changing the setting then refreshing the desktop.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
CurrentBuildNumber
I still have not found a way around it at the moment.
Still looking

I contacted a Microsoft Support person and they said that trial versions and test version "Enforce" that watermark. In other words will not allow you to get rid of it.
If you ended up with some sort of eval version instead of a upgrade or full version then that may explain why you cannot get rid of it.
