Antivirus installed? IRQL_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL is a driver culprit, usually execing on a bad level (or paged out by windows - discussion is large).
About IRQLs: What is IRQL?[^]
Try to get a dump to see at least who is the offensive driver here. Maybe you can uninstall temporary the software, do the 8.1 jump, and put back after upgrade. Seems the upgrade raises a condition not handled by the software that crashes.

Thanks! I use Microsoft Security Essentials. If you can't trust Microsoft, who can you trust?

This should be the fun part.

Well, I don't think is MSE. They test *VERY* hard their drivers. Some VPN, Cisco, ShrewSoft, 32-bit net driver ?

I hit that with a network driver. Since Win8 and Win8.1 are much stricter about drivers (which is a good thing) poorly written drivers crash.

Yep, I've had Windows 7 since it was released (My machine came with Vista-blech and a free upgrade to Win7).... And if I get a new machine with Windows 8, I plan to immediately upgrade to Windows 7 again

Hi,
I would recommend uninstalling your video card driver and network/wireless card drivers (and any other third-party drivers) before performing the upgrade. You could probably download a copy of Autoruns[^] and click the 'Drivers' tab to get a complete listing of installed drivers. If you go into 'Options->Filter Options' you can choose 'Hide Microsoft Entries' which will allow you to see only third-party drivers installed on your machine.
Best Wishes,

Just updated my Dell dual boot Win7 x64/Win8 N version. Updated 8 to 8.1 N - somewhere around 3 hours or so (multiple updates needed before 8 => 8.1), but no troubles.
FYI - is a development machine with nmap, fiddler, xarp, VPNs, VS 2008, 2010, 2012, WinDBG etc etc - a dev machine with all sorts of "things that can go wrong" installed on it. Plus MSE and various drivers from my work (Bitdefender ).
So, although my chances to blew it up are considerable large, it went smooth.
That leaves "find the driver" to you.

I have used it in IE9 and Chrome and it remembers me the old dial-up days!
Worse, the Tabbed style has gone and the Basic version do not include it!
To me, it's kind of backward move

I hate it and have run into way too many bugs. One reason I stuck with Yahoo Mail over Gmail are the tabs. It's really annoying to be writing an email, need to refer to another email and have to awkwardly switch back and forth. The other day, when responding to an email, Yahoo went into a refresh cycle about every ten seconds, which made it almost impossible to finish writing the email--shutting off "conversations" was a huge help.
Even before the change, I've noticed that Yahoo Mail opens a huge number of connections and most of the problems I've with flash crashing are Yahoo ads.
Unfortunately, Yahoo doesn't provide an easy way to dump my saved emails to disk. Regardless, I'm seriously considering switching to my GMail account.

They need to stop changing the design and start fixing the bugs.
But the latest change has added some performance boost. It feels lightweight than the previous versions.

Amen to that. It is lightweight, but opening a Fiddler on yahoo.com still makes me feel like in a campaign when 3 zerg attacks you.

Another failure, just as gmail (not that bad as yahoo, but still). The only decent UI/usability and responsiveness I have is on outlook.com. Outlook is *the* email client - others are simply lame, or for hardcore guys, I suppose - and I'm glad outlook.com tries to follow the paradigm.
Yahoo just steps on the user, as does gmail with labels and crap. Long live the PM which f***s up the themes and icons while still forget that the user wants to read email and not be social.
Benefits of replacing C++ with scripting, I suppose.

I use it mainly to receive emails, so can't say much. However, I thought the tabbed interface was one of its best features and I was kind of hoping that Gmail and Outlook.com would follow suit!
On a related matter the recent second revamp of Yahoo! Groups has been disastrous, just like the one they pulled after a couple of weeks three years ago. But they seem to be sticking to their guns this time around.
Yahoo! have a reputation for regressing in usability as far as I'm concerned.

To me, am very much satisfied with new Yahoo Mail. Why? well, from that day when i updated it, i like it's improved UI, less mail loading time(especially for it), more advanced options, mail format etc. I would like to test it in IE10 or 11,or if you wish in Firefox or Opera's updated version.I'm sure you will get it's benefit, in IE9 it is too much slow than what it actually is!

Does look rather unlikely - either a bug or abuse, I'd think.
Probably best to post in Sugs'n'Bugs and get Chris to have a look. If you post it up in Spam and Abuse, I suspect his account will get closed, which if wrong if it is a bug that has randomly hit him.

Seriously, though as OriginalGriff said I would post it in the bugs forum[^] to have it checked out.
