I trust the Metric system implicitly.
I don't trust the people who use it...

I think it is a stretch to blame the metric system for that one.

On that basis, I maintain that it was perfectly fit for purpose.

If the trains went fast enough (approaching the speed of light) through the stations would they get thinner and be able to pass through unscathed?
Or am I getting confused between science and Red Dwarf again?
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

It is dangerous for a train to go fast.
As it approached the higher speeds, the Doppler Effect would shorten the wave length of the light, turning the Red Light into a Green Light and possibly causing a crash!
Fortunately this is not possible in the UK where no train travels at any kind of speed that could be considered "Fast".

I'm getting the train to London and back on Saturday, we're going first class as it was 46p more expensive than second standard pleb class.
Last time I traveled in first class on a train I only had a standard class ticket. Middle class looting.

I suspect it's the red Dwarf (or Top Gear) logic one...
But I do see a small problem with this approach - have you ever stood on a platform when a fast train goes through the station? Remember the wind that preceded it? And the suction that followed it? Might get a little extreme at those speeds...

I have travelled by Welsh Wales Wail Ways and if there's one thing they don't do it is fast.

They would just be shorter.

Wait a second, I thought all you guys across the pond used the metric system. There shouldn't have been any miss measuring like with our Mars probe a few years ago.

Well...officially. Mostly.
Fuel is in litres, beer is in pints.
Fabric is metres, distances are in miles.
And unlike the rest of Europe, the UK still uses a 12 hour day, and a 12 hour night, rather than the metric equivalent.

I'm not questioning your powers of observation; I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is. (V)
