Just got my phone bill for the Christmas period where we went to Oz for 2 weeks, Singapore being my base and SingTel being my provider. Talk about bill shock, $2,987 data roaming charges.
Reduced by $2,948 because of the temporary roaming plan I used, it is really scary that without the plan some poor bastard (me last time) would be up for almost 3k.

What have you do to get a bill of almost 3K for two weeks!?!?!??!
Skipper: We'll fix it.
Alex: Fix it? How you gonna fix this?
Skipper: Grit, spit and a whole lotta duct tape.

Mycroft Holmes wrote: essential web That's a typo.
It's missing an 'n', an 'o', a 'p', and an 'r', and all the other letters are superfluous.

What's sad is that for 3k he could've gotten several real life an 'o', a 'h', a 'k', another 'o', a 'r', a 's', and of course an 'e'.

In Cairns, in summer, pron is not required, you can see all the eye candy you want just walking down the street and then you can go tho the beach!

Yeah, when I went on holiday I got a text stating: 14€/Mb.
Being on holiday and not in the mood to go figure out how to turn off data roaming and such, I just left my phone in airplane mode and turned only Wifi on.
Added bonus: I wasn't bothered by any phone calls / texts

I have done that in more enlightened countries but Oz still live in the dark ages in some respects, wifi is not available everywhere and we did not have it where we were staying.

Hmm that does make it a bit difficult.
I had WiFi in the hotel, and that really was enough, I didn't need to be available for anyone or need to read my mails instantly so I just checked them in the evening.

I remember hearing of one Canadian who went down to Florida for 2 weeks and was downloading movies galore etc.... WITHOUT a roaming plan - her bill was in the 70 or 80Ks....

Yes, once bitten...
During Hurricane Wilma, our company lost power, etc.
I traveled up north, and every client called me on my cell.
I did NOT THINK about the minutes. It was pretty much 10hrs/day, every day, on the cell,
sometimes with 3 way calling... For 7 business days...
I was LIT... I called Sprint, they basically said "Tough", you should have pre-purchased extra minutes. I changed my plan to a plan that has a FIXED rate of $0.10/min if I go over my minutes... (Years later, I have never used it).
I turned the bill in on my expense report. I think I was 3,000 minutes over at 0.45/min.
My boss was visibly shaken, but eventually paid it...
After that I have been extremely careful. There should be a setting "After $600.00 shut the phone off!" But you know the phone company doesnt want that.

Which just goes to show that the amount they want to charge is shullbit.
Like a doctor's bill that magically gets negotiated down to 10% of the original once an insurance company gets involved.
