It came with Windows 8.1, I have no idea how to use 8.1. I thought what the heck I will just go to Windows 10 and then I won't need to ever learn how to use 8.1 and 10. Ran the upgrade, got stuck in a permanent boot loop.
Looks like I'll have to learn how to use 8.1 after all. So far it seems rather unintuitive and every time I click on anything I seem to get a load of 'tutorial' type messages and a sensory overload.

If it's a new laptop, I would choose to install Win 10 from scratch instead of trying to perform an upgrade to get a cleaner result. Just my 5 cents...

Yes, but you need to do the upgrade to get the Win10 license. Then do a clean install.

No, you don't! Well, at least, you didn't two weeks ago!

Just get windows 10 working.
Even there's people that have got big problems here I do have it at home and it works much better than any 8.x flavor.
I'm still thinking about "upgrading" my work computer or not... 7 professional installed there and I'm glad of it by now... probably I'll upgrade before losing the opportunity to make it for free, but who knows... time will say.
There are tutorials on the Internet on how to get the disks done to make a clean install of windows 10...
Good luck!

A lot of people seem to have had trouble with video drivers during the upgrade process. It might be worth booting in safe mode (if you can) and uninstall any video drivers already installed.
Once I'd upgraded, I did a clean install and everything worked as expected.

At what point does it count as 'upgraded'? As I did an upgrade and it then failed to boot to the log-in screen.
Have I upgraded far enough to do a clean install do you think?
Perhaps not - I had to do a clean install (or the closest thing to it) by doing a restore from settings from Windows 10 (after the upgrade).
When I tried to do a clean install from the Windows 10 ISO, I still got asked for the key (which I don't have) even though I'd previously upgraded.
Microsoft haven't made the process very robust

It asked. But there should have been a skip option. Have they removed that now?
No, it was still there, but I assumed that it'd ask me once the install was finished? A bit of text from Microsoft explaining things there wouldn't have gone amiss..

I sort of took your advice, when running the install instead of doing the 'upgrade this PC' I did the create installation media option and created a DVD.
When installing from the DVD it gave me the option to skip the installing of updates at the current time, and everything installed just fine, Windows 10 is working well.
Still no idea how to use it mind!
