Bruno (the guy below) obsessed with the idea that members with hi reputation points can do anything to those with low, which of course only shows, that he didn't has the historical view...
Skipper: We'll fix it.
Alex: Fix it? How you gonna fix this?
Skipper: Grit, spit and a whole lotta duct tape.

I must admit I care a little about my reputation.
Not Lounge reputation (I think I pretty much ruined that with some Songs of the Week ), but "article writing", and "helping others" reputation.
Although I don't do QA anymore and I haven't written an article/blog in a while I can proudly say I'm a legend and an authority and, on a website such as this, that means something.
The points are nice, but nothing beats having a (highly) esteemed CP member giving a compliment on one of your articles (as in leaving a message and, optionally, rating a 4 or 5)

When I can trade my rep points for mortgage payments or lottery tickets, then I'll care. They are utterly meaningless.

glennPattonInThePUB wrote: why do some members care about rep points
I don't care about the points at all. However, CP does. I have to have a certain number of points before I have certain permissions.
Also, I have written 13 articles and 1 tip now. I think the interesting part of it all is contribution.
At times a huge number of people will read articles and download code but then not vote at all. Ok. Maybe my articles really are that bad and they are not voting to save my feelings?
But, there are other people who vote a 3 or a 1 and never even provide any feedback. So your article average points go down for some unknown reason when what you are actually trying to do is start a conversation with your articles but then hardly anyone replies.
So, maybe a lot of what the points are about is community. That's how I see it. If someone takes the time to vote they are attempting to build the community. The people (98%) who simply download the code and never say anything are just takers.
Disclaimer: This is not a rant. Just trying to provide some ideas about what happens and why some people may think about points more. They may be thinking more about attempting to build community. But I also know that ain't really happening.

Interesting is XXXX regarded the same way as Fosters by Ozzies?

xxxx is marginally more drinkable than fosters. I don't know of anyone who actually drinks fosters in Oz, we just seem to export the dammed stuff.

Are you really sure about that? It's in the same league as Fosters!

Personally I preferred VB (back in the day when I lived in Melbourne) but I'll admit XXXX is drinkable.

I don't much care about rep points. My goal is to get to 200 articles by the end of the year. Only 9 more to go (not including the 3 "tips" I've already written.)

I'd like to get to 100k author points before the world falls into anarchy. I figure ten more articles should do it, but that's a lot of freakin articles when you have other sh|t you'd rather be doing...

Analogy fail. You have a choice as to whether you're here or not. If you don't like the way things are you are entirely free to do one as we say in vernacular. If there's one thing that really pisses me off about this generation it's the rampant arrogance with which it assumes that its minor inconveniences are in any way comparable to the unspeakable suffering of those enslaved and persecuted throughout history. I simply cannot and will not respect that!

No. No!
Respect is given. You can only lose that respect.
But when you meet new people, you have to respect them. Imagine a world where everyone you meet for the first time treats you like sh*t because "you haven't earned their respect yet".
So: you treat people with respect. Always.
Trust however is earned.
so please, don't confuse respect with trust.
