Thanks, I was a bit surprised by that one, too!

OUTSOURCING

Right on both counts! I'm hoping that I haven't made it too hard ...

I think you have ( made it too hard )

Why have I got stuck on thinking it's controversy ?

Not sure - but it's not.
Would anyone like an alternative clue?

Time for solution methinks

On reflection that's a bit hard, so here's another clue with the same answer:
Disturbance upsets rational 'tec (11)
|
|
|
|
|
Altercation - now that was much easier
Still can't work it out from the first clue though

Yes, you got it.
The gist of the original clue was intended to be that you derive action by following the instruction "alter cation".

Ooh bit tenuous that one

Nothing that couldn't be justified by the question mark, I hope.
It was a bit difficult to get the right difficulty level as it was the first one I've ever put on here. I guess I erred a bit too far on the difficult side as I didn't want to make one that people would get in ten seconds flat. Sorry if I've given anyone a headache in the process ...

Not tenuous at all. Brilliant clue wasted on us unbrilliant lot .. I'm claiming heat exhaustion, mind! Definitely should have had a better shot at that. Guess I just wasn't expecting such a highly professional clue in this arena! Most excellent!

A few years back I did my 1st kyu grade (brown belt). Last Tuesday I passed my test for 1st dan.
The test was 2x 3 hours long (last Friday and Tuesday), very intensive (physically) and very extensive (of knowledge). This entailed ground fighting, fighting standing up, push ups, situps, squads, running, ... and testing of the technique knowledge, including previous grades.
The big change here was that not only was the amount larger, you also had to invent your own techniques and include a large quantity of what-ifs on existing techniques.
In our club the custom is that you become sensei when reaching 1st dan, so that has a nice ring to it.
For the curious among you it took me a good 10 years to get it and homo sapiens where hurt during the process (but no injuries ). The sport: Jiu-Jitsu (not Brasilian, the real thing ). We do it for sport, but with a high degree of realism, no competition.
Yes, I'm happy and yes, I'm even a tad proud on myself.

I'm still waiting for my instructor to allow me to test for shodan in Kyokushin karate... Maybe I should try training more???

not sure what shodan is, but I focused on my exam since last summer. That included studying, extra physical training (fitness) and even watching my diet somewhat. The last few weeks where filled with daily doing something for the exam...

Wathcing the diet to get down to a reasonable weight sounds like a good a idea (it might take something like a decade, though... )
