I agree with your point that assuming extraterrestrial civilizations develop in any way similar to our own is foolish.

Faraday was experimenting with electric motors in the 1820's. Any conductor that passes current through it becomes an transmitter. Since we cannot say with absolute certainty the amounts of current Faraday was employing in some of his experiments, it cannot be ruled out as a possible source, but that also assumes the receiving end has receivers sensitive enough to pick up the EM hum of washing machines.

Fair point, and whilst picking that out against the background noise might seem like a virtual impossibility to us, it could well be child's play to a more technologically evolved species.
And if they can do that ... well, we may not have to wait 95 years for a visit.

Well, I do like to entertain the idea that we have our physics fundamentals backwards. It does make the flight of fancy that faster then light travel is possible.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he has to buy bamboo rods, graphite reel, monofilament lines, neoprene waders, tackle boxes, lures, 20 pocket vest, fish finders, depth sounders, radar, boats, trailers, global positioning systems, coolers and a six pack.

Teach a man to fish and his lawyers will be filing suit against you because of his allergic reaction to seafood. The only reason a grown man couldn't fish is because his parents were keeping him away from fish and seafood and then you went and ruined it, risking his life - you murderer!

This one is much more effective if you do it right:
