Mine's been out for years. When it burnt out, I reached in and tried to unscrew it by hand; the glass crumbled in my hand. I don't feel like lifting the beast up and pulling it away from the wall far enough to unplug it, which would render it safe enough to use pliers to remove the base, so I keep a flashlight in the kitchen.

I have four of these which are not being used
Samsung 970 EVO Plus
and I'm thinking I could use them in a NAS of some sort - has anyone here done this ?

The good news is that you should be able to find an affordable interface due to the M2 specification. You'll likely have to shop around. My laptops use pure NVME devices that are far more difficult to find external boards. I've been living on SSDs for over 10 years now starting with SSD SATA drives. The SATA interface was cheap, well know, and for backups, I could just use an inexpensive disk cloner that did it at the h/w level, byte for byte.
It's been a few years, since I've tried again. Maybe there are devices out there that now support pure nvme. It would be nice, but I simply gave up. I've moved almost all of my systems into virtual machines, so my backups are as simple as copy/paste.
Just be careful with the device descriptions on Amazon, Newegg, etc. Somethings the leave off critical specifications.
HMMM, just found several affordable devices on Amazon that support up to 4 nvme m.2 devices. Should be an interesting project.

well as in, I learned something new and it made me think a bit. I have too much on my plate as it is - wife's chariot is dead this morning - but I wonder what the performance would be of ssds in a raid. I'll let the OP let us know

I will second the recommendation for TrueNAS. I purpose built a NAS using a nice small Lian Li chassis with a four drive bay, then added a mini motherboard with an NVME slot and a Core-i5 CPU. Toss in some memory, install TrueNAS to boot from the NVME, and it runs perfectly. I originally had four 3TB drives in it, then upgraded to 8TB units as the prices came down and I needed more space.
The beauty of TrueNAS is that you can replace drives and it automatically rebuilds the array. If you use larger drives, once you've replaced them all it automatically scales the array to use the full amount of newly available space.
Management is via a web interface, creating Windows-accessible shares is a breeze, and TrueNAS is free software and vary capable.
Cheers
Norm

On Ebay, these at 500 Gb are going for $35, and at 1 Tb they are going for $70.
