slight disagreements :
[0] re/ fraction of c as per calculation below :
c = 3e8 meters/s
auto v = 114,004,827 miles/h
auto v = 50,960,157.7 meters/s
fraction of c = .17c = 1/5.8 c
gamma = 1 / sqrt(1 - v^2\c^2 ) = 1.014
[1] re/ traffic officer observes auto cross intersection as per calculation below :
road lane width USA 3.7 m
assume 2 lanes so d = 7.4 m
duration to cross as observed by officer d/v = 1.45e-7 s
[2] re/ arranged meeting at destination ages of auto occupant and of person at destination as per below :
ratio of aging of person waiting at destination wrt auto occupant from time dilation equation is gamma i.e. 1.014 i.e. almost identical
you can't fool me i read about this in 8'th grade .

LMAO! Thank you, BernardIE5317! I had a feeling that someone would correct me on it. How do you calculate the time dilation? I remember learning that the correlation of acceleration to time dilation isn't directly proportional. I remember seeing it graphed. Any significant difference in time dilation only happens when acceleration is something like 70% of c. At that point, the graph appears to show something resembling more of an exponential relationship.
Can you share any insight on what would happen when a housefly impacts the car's windshield at 114,000,000 mph? When I estimated the force of impact, there were far too many ambiguous variables to really be specific. For instance, I didn't include any aerodynamic and atmospheric conditions. Barometric pressure, current wind speed and direction, the specific altitude above sea level, and the oppositional velocity of the housefly... all that stuff.

Time dilation/length contraction[^]
glad i put a smile on your face .
relativistic mass of fly is gamma * rest mass so 12.18 mg
KE = 1/2 m v^2 so 15,815,350,427.406 J
speed of 1kg object w\ same KE is 5,624.118 meters/s
all that other stuff i did not read about in 8th grade ,

hmmm, at that speed, inside the atmosphere, you would burst into flames and rapidly be turned into ash.
You might say that you would have made an Ash-Of-Yourself.
I'll see my self out ....

What would happen if a housefly hit your windshield at 114 million miles per hour?
Let's say that a housefly has a mass of 12 mg. The shockwave alone would atomize the car and everything in it. How would you explain that to your car insurance company? At 114,000,000 mph, your velocity is 183,000,000 kph. The housefly's mass in kg is 0.012. I'm not entirely sure I have my units correct, but if they are, the result is 2,196,000 newtons of force. From there, it gets murky. How much time elapses from when the housefly makes initial contact with the windshield to when the housefly penetrates through the other side of the glass? How much force is exerted on the windshield if the housefly penetrates through the glass like it was a sheet of crape paper? I have no clue, but 2 million newtons of force is a lot. That's well over the amount of thrust exerted by the Space Shuttle's main engine at lift-off.

I just want to add that I think this is one of the funniest threads I've read yet.

As a new member of this community, I would like to get to know some of you. I researched 11 different online groups dedicated to serving those who develop software. This is the one I chose to join. I looked at Hashnode, Hacker News, Stack Overflow, and Reddit to name a few. While these communities can be a great resource in different ways, CodeProject looks to be the best choice. That explains why I am here, but I'm curious to know who you are, and why you choose to be here. What compels you to be a member of this community?

Hi Steve!
I'm known here as OriginalGriff or OG, because my real world name and all the variants I could think of were taken when I registered. I found this place when looking for help with a problem I had in the early days of learning C# / .NET and got involved with a few discussions. I stayed because they were a friendly bunch (with little or none of the elitism that plagues SO) and many members know what they are talking about.
It's popularly believed here that I'm a gestalt mind spread over several bodies, but in practice I learned to type a long time ago and got quite good at it which looks like the same thing to the casual viewer.
Welcome aboard - feel free to spit on the mat, but don't call the cat a b*****d - he's sensitive about that. And has an account here ...

Your head or the keyboard?

When it comes to the grand scheme of things, I haven't a clue how the universe works. I've done many faceplants onto keyboards in my time. I don't know if these faceplants did anything good for me, but maybe if I took the time to repeatedly bash my head into my keyboard it would eventually pay off. When you bash your head onto the keyboard, is it the keyboard that eventually complies, or is it your head? For me, it's usually my head that doesn't comply. I'll take your advice, and find out for myself. You might be on to something.

It's the computer, or rather the code. I wrote "compiles" rather than "complies"
