Installing Steam gives you access to their substantial library of games from all genres. It allows you to buy games for your Steam account or gift games to other Steam account holders. Once you own the game, you can install it on any PC that has Steam installed (any number of times). Many games will sync their files across systems. This allows you to play a game on a laptop during lunch at a cafe and then later continue your game on your home PC. This feature can also come in handy when your hard disk dies so you don't loose all your progress in your favorite time-waster.
On installing it on a work computer, that would a question I would run by whoever you report to.

Been using it for years.
I wasn't a great fan when I used to buy CD games and then have the game itself originate from Steam (CD just loaded from Steam.)
But now that I just use it seems ok. I do keep it running all the time. It updates fairly often but doesn't impact me in anyway.
I appreciate the fact that when I buy a new computer I can install all of the games I ever bought using their interface.
Their interface is not great. Works but has oddities. They have features that allow you to turn stuff on or off in terms of game selection but which do not work. But to balance that out the games also have user reviews, which I find very useful (not for like or dislike but rather for mentions of features in games that I want or do not want.)
I suspect there are games that can't be bought on it. But several indie companies including shareware that I have bought over the years are on there.

SO here a small poll about the tools you use to archive and version project management documents. We all have source control for source code, but what are you using for other "normal" documents such as open point lists, schedules, customer requirements, etc... ?

SharePoint. Stick it in and forget about it.

Then upgrade and...
[2 days later when it sort of mostly works and has almost all of the documents back again] ...find that the ACL has been trashed so no one can open it anyway.

later also used to persuade the customer the software is done even though it's not what they want.

We use SVN for documentation and other life cycle data. We've only been using it for about a year but so far it seems to do what we need it to. One draw back is the inability to share documents in different projects and branches. We built our own in-house client to interface with.
