Did not need to. While the message that was displayed was not really helpful, it turned out that the EotD (Error of the Day) was no error at all. The user was denied access because of some weird settings and existing twice (!) in the database. You can't confuse my security functions with such simple tricks.
The only change concerned the message. Instead of some weird 'There has been an error' stuff, we now have something about 'access denied because of user settings', but that must not be deployed right away.

My duck-and-cover tactic:
My arrival at work precedes every else. I do the updates - and if they barf - I roll them back. No one's the wiser and the user-panic that would otherwise ensue is (usually!) averted.

I am exchanging my old phone with a new one. There is a lot of data on it (like banking apps) which must not end up in bad hands. I understand that I can still get some, if not all, files back after factory reset. So, I looked up play store to find a wipe app but there are many. With plenty of positive and negative reviews. I am not really sure which one to try out. Anyone here knows good app I could use?
If not, I will do it the hard way. (Factory reset -> Save junk files on entire phone storage -> Factory reset) * 3. This will take some time though.

I have an Android device. I highly suspect Apple approach will work with Android. Can you lend me an iphone so I can try?

Can you access it using USB ? Then I would wipe it using a normal "PC" erase-and-forget executable.

Do bear in mind that this is solid state storage, and it's not like HDD - blocks are "rotated" to prevent them getting used too much, even if the OS believes it has the "same" physical block.
It is quite possible to erase eMMC with good "overwriters" and still retrieve the original data later.
I'd suggest an encrypt, hard reset, fill it up, encrypt, hard reset cycle if you are at all worried. And as an extra precaution, change all your passwords!

My wife uses that phone. I am certain she has no clue what her current passwords are. Somehow, it is now my responsibility to ensure that new phone has all her contacts, photographs and what not.
